The Application Process For Police Officer Candidates

How Old Can You be to Become a Police Officer?

It isnt easy becoming a police officer. Potential candidates need to go through a stringent application process designed to weed out those who dont have what it takes to become outstanding police officers.

Police officers help maintain peace and order and ensure that members of the community stay safe. This job comes with immense responsibility. The application process itself is not for everyone.

Canadian police agencies generally follow the same process which involves a series of tests, checks and interviews, including:

  • A written exam
  • A polygraph exam
  • A background investigation

Some of these tests require detailed paperwork but minimal preparation. For some tests, like the physical tests, you would be best prepared if you did a fitness training program, prior to, depending on your fitness level. Other tests, like the polygraph exam, require no preparation at all.

Applicants can be declined at any point in the stages listed above and even if a candidate passes every stage, an offer of employment is not guaranteed.

Once you have completed all assessments, your entire application package is reviewed and measured against other applicants to determine the most suitable candidates for the role as a police officer.

If you are recruited, you can expect a conditional offer of employment that allows you to advance to the final step before you become a police officer: cadet training.

What Is The Maximum Age You Can Become An Officer

As a guideline, we will use the requirements of the New York State Police to give you a rough idea of age specifications. For them specifically, you have to be less than 30 when you submit your application. Once submitted, you must be less than 36 when you are officially appointed. The make exceptions for those who have served in the military, allowing an extra 6 years to apply. For military vets, they may be up to 42 years old when they actually become a cop.

Federal government police have similar requirements. They allow you to be appointed up to the age of 37. Just like the NYSP, they give exceptions to any military vets and also special arrangements for anyone already employed by the federal government.

That all being said, this does not apply everywhere. In fact, you are quite likely to find a police force that is not so strict to these guidelines.

Look At Maturity And Life Experience Not Age

We have hired people in their late 20s and early 30s who didn’t make it. I think it has to be a maturity level of emotions and a completely clear understanding of what LE actually does and sees and experiences rather than posting an age requirement. David Garcia

I started as a reserve deputy at the age of 19. As the head of my office, I would not make that type of decision to hire such a young person regardless of how mature they are. You can hire too young, but I believe you can’t hire too old. I think 24-28 is a great range for a first-time officer. A little maturity and life experience are necessary for this type of career. Chris Matthews

Age doesn’t matter. Relevant education, life and work experience, and maturity matter. To gain most of that takes a certain time, so I would say 18 is illogical, even 21 isn’t old enough in most cases. Kids who go straight into an academy after high school should have a transitional stage where they work with training officers or have other positions like in detention that are easier to monitor instead of sending them out on their own. Dominique Gourdon

The age doesnt need to change, but I do believe anyone who wants to be an officer should be required to have at least one year of jail experience. The minimum age for that is 18. Dustin Bresko

How Old Is Too Old To Become A Cop

You must be under 30 years old at the time you apply to the NYSP, and under 36 years old at the time you’re appointed. The NYSP allows an additional six years for military veterans, both for the application age and the appointment age, so it’s possible for you to be as old as 42 when you’re hired.

Most federal law enforcement agencies have a maximum age of 37 at appointment, but they, too, waive the age limit for qualified military veterans and members already working within the federal system.

Continuing Education And Career Advancement

Once you have completed all of these steps to becoming a police officer, you will still have plenty to learn. Nothing beats on-the-job experience to show you all of the specialized areas police officers might want or need to learn more about. The best officers are never done learning.

Similar to other industries, officers must meet continuing education requirements in order to renew their license. For example, Minnesota police officer requirements mandate a minimum of 48 hours of continuing education within the three-year licensing period in order to maintain their license.

In addition, active officers are required to train annually in use of force and once every five years in emergency vehicle operations/pursuit driving. Specialized training may also be directed by your police department based on federal and local needs. Departments might also incentivize other education opportunities to encourage their officers forward. Additional training or credentials may be required for those looking to climb the police ranks.

Police Academy Training Requirements

Video: BCSO cadet sets record as youngest deputy at 18 years old

Police academy training is both mentally and physically rigorous. Police academies dont like dropouts so the police academy requirements for physical and mental health are strict. A physical exam is required to enter as well as graduate from any police academy. The initial physical exam evaluates overall health and fitness, whereas the final physical exam evaluates competencies in areas such as: endurance, agility, and knowledge of police skills. An estimated two-thirds of recruits cannot pass the final physical exam upon entering the academy . Daily physical training is highly recommended, check out this article on police academy training.

In the life of a police officer, academic knowledge is just as important as physical ability. Police academy recruits are required to take a written and oral exam. This exam covers topics such as law, ethics, and law enforcement rules and regulations. In states with larger immigrant populations, the learning of a second language is also required.

What Is The Minimum Age To Become A Police Officer

Many different countries have a minimum age to become a police officer, and that age can depend upon the agency that is hiring and the location of the agency. Some peace officer organizations also impose a maximum hiring age, but this can be challenged if the person is physically fit and he/she has held other civil service or government jobs. For instance, people who were formerly in a countrys military service may be able to override maximum age requirements.

In the US, the minimum age to become a police officer in a lot of states is 20. Jobs with state or federal peace keeping and investigatory agencies usually require people to be 21. Meeting the minimum age requirement is not difficult since many people will need to complete at minimum a couple of years of college prior to getting hired by a peace keeping agency. Though some departments will hire people who have a high school diploma or the equivalent, applicants with an associates or bachelors degree may be preferred. Numerous state and federal agencies require a bachelors degree, and most people dont receive these until they are at least 21.
