The Law Enforcement Bond

Even in the current climate with anti-police sentiments receiving a lot of press, police officers enjoy certain public respect for putting their lives on the line every day.

Arrest Or Criminal Summons

If the police believe they have enough evidence that you committed a crime, they may go before a magistrate or judge and ask for a warrant for your arrest. If you are accused of a felony, the police or agency may hand over the case to a local or federal prosecutor.

However, in North Carolina, instead of being arrested for a state-level offense, you may receive a criminal summons that requires you to appear in court. The police may go before a magistrate and present evidence that you committed an infraction or a crime. The magistrate can then sign a criminal summons, which requires you to appear in court and answer questions about the charges.

If you receive a criminal summons, call a lawyer immediately. If you ignore the summons and do not go to court, a warrant will be issued for your arrest.

How Do I Stop The Police From Calling Me

The easiest thing to do is get a lawyer to intermediate and head them off. Let me talk to them for you.

If you get a phone message from a police officer asking to speak to you about a crime, .

As your attorney, I can call them back and be your intermediary so they wont keep calling you. I can provide any basic factual information that might be appropriate for the situation, or none at all.

I will tell the police that any further contact must be through me, so they can no longer bother you directly.

The harassment will end, immediately. In many cases, the police wont have anything else to go on, and the case will simply be dropped. Or, at a minimum, the police will have to proceed with whatever evidence they already have, and you havent inadvertently given them more information to use against you.

This can ultimately prevent you from being charged at all.

Different Countries Different Call Signs

In Australia, a call sign could be ##-PS-1A. The first two numbers would stand for the specific station. PS in this call sign means patrol sergeant. The 1 at the end is a designator in case there are multiple units on duty, and the A represents the shift. And yet, this isnt the same format used across Australia.

How did I figure out how to create a call sign for my story?

First, I had to find out what the sectors in Cleveland are and what format the officers used for their call signs. To figure this out, there was a lot of hair pulling, aggravation, and research. I looked at the Cleveland Police Department websites and maps to determine the sectors. The hard part was learning what the call signs meant.

During my research, I uncovered a video on YouTube of a dispatch recording depicting the moment when the police rescued three women from Ariel Castros home. Listening to the recording, I learned that the Cleveland police officer identified himself as Adam-23 .

I knew if I stuck close to that, itd be pretty accurate, especially since it was the correct location for my story. I didnt want to alter the call sign too much, fearing Id get it wrong, but I also didnt want to use the same call sign Officer Anthony Espada and his partner, Michael Tracy, used.

So whats my characters call sign?

Adam-24

Policing Diverts Billions Of Dollars From Schools Health Care And Other Vital Programs That Need More Funding To Strengthen Our Communities And Support Shared Well

City, business leaders call Seattle Police Department reductions a ‘crisis’

U.S. cities collectively spend $100 billion a year on policing, while needed investments in education, health care, housing, and other critical programs go unfulfilled, particularly in poor communities and communities of color. New York City, for instance, spends more on policing than it does on the Departments of Health, Homeless Services, Housing Preservation and Development, and Youth and Community Development combined.

Our tax dollars must be reallocated from this system that regularly murders Black people with impunityand instead invested in programs that strengthen our communities.

Examples Of Why Florida Police Might Call You:

For example, lets say the cops call you regarding a domestic violence charge and you say:Yeah, I was there but he/she is making it all up to get custody of the kids.

Not a big deal, right? WRONG. Even a small statement like this does FAR more damage than you would think.

Your first mistake: You just admitted to police that you were there where an alleged domestic violence crime took place. In every single criminal case, the prosecution is required to prove that you were at the scene of the crime — and you just did their job for them before they even officially charged you with any crime.

Your second mistake: You just limited your defense. Stand Your Ground and self-defense laws in Florida are very defendant-friendly, but based on what you said to the cop they may no longer be applicable to your case.

Its impossible to know if youre making these critical mistakes if you dont know the ins and outs of the law. Only an attorney will be able to help you fully protect your rights if the police want to question you.

How Did Police 10 Codes Originate

Houlton Police Department hires 2 new officers

Originally, Police 10 codes were used in the United States law enforcement community prior to the Second World War. In 1940, the Association of Public Safety Communication Officials published the first official set of police 10 codes. These radio signals were invented to help reduce the use of speech on the police radio. In addition, the codes enable a certain amount of privacy to the radio transmissions. Meaning, someone must know the meaning of the signals to understand the discussion.

In 1974, the Association of Public Safety Communication Officials expanded the use of the police radio codes to make them briefer and to standardize message traffic.

My Head Rocked Back From Being Hit

Wake Up Call from Boston Police Department recruits

The man in black behaved in exactly the same way with Ekaterina, 23. In the same office, #103, she was placed on a chair, with a table to one side. Ekaterina sat comfortably, cross-legged, and put her hand on the table. The man in black first kicked her legs, demanding that she stand up straight, and when she refused, he slapped her.

My head rocked back from being hit my neck still hurts. Then, calling me names along the way, he asked questions. I answered everything by claiming my constitutional rights, and then he took a two-litre bottle of water and poured it over my head. I got wet to my underpants, Ekaterina recalls. Then he took an ordinary antiseptic spray, which he apparently took from another girl, and began to puff it in my face.

The girl did not answer any questions. Then the man decided to forcibly photograph her. He held Ekaterina by her hair while the policewoman sitting opposite tried to take a picture on a phone.

The torture of another detainee, Alexandra Kaluzhskikh, was made public on that same day it was by independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta. She was the only one who managed to activate her phones recorder during her interaction with the police.

The policeman beat Alexandra on the legs, doused her with water, cuffed her on the back of the head and dragged her around by the hair. Not as hard as my father, the girl said, in response to one of the blows.

Official Set Of Police Ten Codes

There is no truly universal or official set of police 10 codes. Therefore, the meaning of a particular scanner code or signal can vary between one police jurisdiction and another. For example, police departments in the state of California will likely use different codes and signals than the state of Florida, New York, or Texas.

At first, law enforcement ten signals were intended to be a concise, standardized system to help officers and officials talk on the radio. However, the proliferation of different meanings has rendered it somewhat useless. Most commonly, in situations where people from different agencies and jurisdictions need to communicate with one another.

In 2005, the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency began discouraging the use of ten-codes and other law enforcement radio signals. This was due to their high variability in meaning between departments and agencies. Hence, the Department of Homeland Security may discontinue the use of the signals.

Many police departments around the country are using regular English during radio conversations to ensure clarity in communications. This actually makes things easier for the officer and dispatch. As a result, they dont have to mentally refer back to the list of ten codes to decipher a transmission. However, this approach does eliminate any secrecy or privacy from the radio transmission.
