Importance Of Police Reports

As previously stated, police departments in every city are there to provide aid to citizens who are responsible for reporting crime by way of filing police reports.

Police reports are a way to document incidents, both large and small. They help identify perpetrators of crimes so that officers can stop them and any further crimes. Reports help keep both citizens and the police department accountable for public safety.

For cases involving vehicles, accident police reports are helpful when filing insurance claims, identifying the party at fault and keeping city roads safe.

How To File A Police Report

If you are involved in an accident, you may need to call the police and file a police report. In most states, if an accident results in death or injury or property damage exceeds a certain threshold then by law you are required to call the police. That threshold can vary depending on whether or not the motorists involved in the accident are insured. In Illinois, for example, the property damage threshold at which police must be called to an accident is usually $1,500. However, if any driver involved in the crash is uninsured then that threshold is just $500.

Even if you think your accident doesnt meet the minimum threshold, it is usually still a good idea to file a police report. Thats because a police report is an official account of the accident and it can have a huge impact on your insurance claim. Remember that even if you call the police and the police dont come to the accident scene you can still visit the police department later and file a report there. Some police departments, such as the Los Angeles Police Department, even allow you to file police reports online so long as it relates to a non-emergency incident.

The roommate said she opened her door again when she heard the crying, and thats when she saw the figure in the mask, the documents said.

She described the intruder as 5-foot-10 or taller, and not very muscular, but athletically built with bushy eyebrows, according to the documents.

At about 4:17 a.m., a security camera less than 50 feet from Kernodles room picked up sounds of a barking dog and distorted audio of what sounded like voices or a whimper followed by a loud thud, according to the documents.

Both surviving roommates were quickly ruled out as suspects and cooperated with the investigation following the gory murders, police repeatedly said.

The two broke their silence by sharing their memories of the four beautiful people in letters read at a memorial service in early December.

Maddie, Xana, Kaylee and Ethan were all one of a kind, the pastor at Real Life Ministries read aloud from the letters written by the two survivors.

To Xana and Ethan: they were the perfect pair together and had this unstoppable relationship, Mortensen wrote. My people who changed my life in so many ways and made me so happy. I know it will be hard to not have the four of them in our lives, but I know Xana, Ethan, Maddie and Kaylee would want us to live life and be happy and they would want us to celebrate their lives.

A warrant is a legal order that local, state or federal authorities must issue prior to arresting a person within their respective jurisdictions. If someone has a warrant out for his arrest, it means that sooner or later , the authorities will seek out and arrest him. Finding out whether someone is wanted for arrest can be done by determining if there are any warrants out for his arrest.

Visit your state or local governments website and find the clerk of courts page. Click the Public Records option, which will be listed under the services offered by that department, and browse through it to see if a specific person has warrants out for her arrest. When you arrive at the Search option, enter as much information as possible about the person, but at minimum her first and last name. Alternatively, visit the clerk of courts office and complete your inquiry in person.

Click any of the links listed under Resources, where you can input any persons name and information and search for warrants they may have. Please note that these services may charge a fee.

    Why Are Police Reports Important

Investigating a crime, incident or accident relies a lot on specific and truthful facts. In order to minimize the occurrence of people filling in fake police report templates, police typically speak to the victims or witnesses personally to get an account of all the details. Police reports are used in order to determine if any charges will be filed against the suspect.

If and when a charge is filed, a copy of the police report is given to the criminal defense lawyers to guide them in understanding the details of the incident and be able to start preparing defensive strategies. Police reports can also be used throughout the investigation before the trial and during the trial as a reference.

It is an ideal for incident reports to be done right after the incident or crime had occurred. At the crime scene, the police should take down notes of everything theyve seen and observed. They also take statements from the people involved and present at the scene along with evidence. After the crime scene has been cleared and made secure, the police officers would then have to write the report as soon as possible.

Once a criminal charge has been filed, the law enforcement agency should be able to provide the defendant and/or his attorney with a copy of the report when it is needed. If no report is given, it could be cause for the dismissal of the case.

    File A Restraining Order

If you’re in an emergency, call 911.

If you’ve been a victim of domestic abuse and want to take legal action, you may be able to file for a protective order. Protective orders are also known as restraining orders or injunctions.

The process for obtaining a protective order differs from state to state. Your local police and court can help you get the process started. Contact your state, county, or municipal court for more information.

Generally, you have to fill out paperwork and submit it to the county courthouse. A judge may issue a temporary restraining order to protect you immediately. To get a longer-term order, your judge may want either or both a full court hearing and your abuser’s presence.

The police can enforce a protective order. If necessary, the order can include special provisions like:

    • Custody of children

    • Forcing the abuser to leave a home

Some states require the abuser to surrender all firearms.
