Laptop Theft And Cybersecurity Concerns

A laptop owned by Senator Jeff Merkley was stolen. A laptop taken from Speaker Pelosi’s office was a “laptop from a conference room … that was only used for presentations”, according to Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff. Representative Ruben Gallego said “we have to do a full review of what was taken, or copied, or even left behind in terms of bugs and listening devices“. Military news website SOFREP reported that “several” secretlevel laptops were stolen, some of which had been abandoned while still logged in to SIPRNet, causing authorities to temporarily shut down SIPRNet for a security update on January 7 and leading the United States Army Special Operations Command to re-authorize all SIPRNet-connected computers on January 8.

Representative Anna Eshoo said in a statement that “mages on social media and in the press of vigilantes accessing congressional computers are worrying” and she had asked the Chief Administrative Officer of the House “to conduct a full assessment of threats based on what transpired”. The CAO said it was “providing support and guidance to House offices as needed”.

Attack On The Capitol

During his January 6 speech, President Trump called upon supporters to walk to the Capitol. Just before the attack, pipe bombs were discovered near the complex. Attackers besieged and ultimately breached the Capitol. Members of the Congress barricaded themselves in the chamber, and one attacker was fatally shot by police while attempting to breach a barricade.

After officials at the Pentagon delayed deployment of the National Guard citing concerns about optics, D.C. Mayor Bowser requested assistance from the Governor of Virginia. By 3:15, Virginia state assets began arriving in D.C. After Vice President Pence and the Congress were evacuated to secure locations, law enforcement cleared and secured the Capitol.

Attempts To Overturn The Presidential Election

DemocratJoe Biden defeated incumbent RepublicanDonald Trump in the 2020 United States presidential election. Trump and other Republicans attempted to overturn the election, falsely claiming widespread voter fraud.

Within hours after the closing of the polls, while votes were still being tabulated, Trump declared victory, demanding that further counting be halted. He began a campaign to subvert the election, through legal challenges and an extralegal effort. Trump’s lawyers had concluded within ten days after the election that legal challenges to the election results had no factual basis or legal merit. Despite those analyses, he sought to overturn the results by initiating the filing of at least sixty lawsuits, including two brought to the Supreme Court. Those actions sought to nullify election certifications and to void votes that had been cast for Biden. Those challenges were all rejected by the courts for lack of evidence or the absence of legal standing.

Capitol Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty To Obstruction Charges Over Messages With Rioter

A U.S. Capitol Police officer who was charged last week with two counts of obstruction of justice for allegedly urging a Capitol rioter to remove incriminating posts following the Jan. 6 attack pleaded not guilty in a preliminary court appearance Tuesday.

Michael Angelo Riley was charged on Friday with the two counts, which carry a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison.

At his first court appearance on Friday, Riley was released on his own recognizance and directed not to contact certain people that prosecutors say are involved in the case.

Prosecutors say Riley, a 25-year veteran of the Capitol Police who serves on a K-9 unit, reached out on Facebook to someone who had posted images of the riot. Charging documents identify the individual only as “Person 1.”

“Hey , im a capitol police officer who agrees with your political stance,” Riley allegedly wrote in a Facebook direct message. “Take down the part about being in the building they are currently investigating and everyone who was in the building is going to charged. Just looking out!”

Riley was charged with one count for allegedly persuading Person 1 to delete their social media posts and another count for deleting all of his correspondence with Person 1.

A federal prosecutor said during Tuesday’s hearing that Riley has not been offered a plea deal and did not indicate whether one would be forthcoming.

In 2019, Kara Swisher, a columnist for The New York Times, envisioned what would happen “if Mr. Trump loses the 2020 election and tweets inaccurately the next day that there had been widespread fraud and, moreover, that people should rise up in armed insurrection to keep him in office”. In early September 2020, citizen journalistTim Pool said in a recorded conversation that “I’ve had messages from people saying that they’ve already got plans to rush to D.C. as soon as Nov. 3 goes chaotic”, and that, “The right-wing militias, the Oath Keepers, the Three Percenters, and just the Proud Boys and Trump supporters, they are going to rush full-speed to D.C. They are going to take the White House and do whatever they can and paramilitary”. On December 1, 2020, a Georgia election official publicly warned, “Stop inspiring people to commit potential acts of violence. Someone’s going to get hurt. Someone’s going to get shot. Someone’s going to get killed”.

A January 2 article by The Daily Beast reported protesters were discussing bringing guns to the District, breaking into federal buildings, and attacking law enforcement. Bombs Discovered Near Capitol Complex

Around 12:45 p.m., a bomb was discovered next to a building containing Republican National Committee offices by a woman using the shared alleyway to access her apartment building’s laundry room. She alerted RNC security, which investigated and summoned law enforcement police arrived “almost immediately”. U.S. Capitol Police, FBI agents and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all responded to the RNC bomb.

About thirty minutes later, while officers were still responding at the RNC, they were informed a second pipe bomb had been discovered under a bush at the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The devices were of a similar design about one foot in length, with end caps and wiring apparently attached to a 60-minute kitchen timer, and containing an unknown powder and some metal. No evidence of a remote detonation method, such as via cell phone, was discovered. They were safely detonated by bomb squads police later said they were “hazardous” and could have caused “great harm”.

A Capitol Police officer filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump a year after the arguing that he played a “central role in inciting” the riot.

In the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for Washington DC, Briana Kirkland, 29, said Trump’s “provocative words and actions” resulted in the violence she and other officers experienced.

“As the leader of this violent mob, who took their cues from his campaign rhetoric and personal tweets and traveled from around the country to the nation’s capital at Trump’s invitation for the January 6 rally, Trump was in a position of extraordinary influence over his followers, who committed assault and battery on Briana Kirkland,” the complaint says. “Trump, by his words and conduct, directed the mob that stormed the Capitol and assaulted and battered Briana Kirkland.”

Kirkland said she suffered a traumatic brain injury that forced her to take a year off from work. She’s seeking at least $75,000 in damages, according to the complaint.

A Year After The Darkest Day For Capitol Police Its New Chief Focuses On Rebuilding

It was shortly before 8 a.m. on a busy December day.

The Capitol was gearing up for President Biden, Vice President Harris and lawmakers to take part in the Dec. 9 lying-in-state ceremony for the late Republican Kansas senator and presidential nominee Bob Dole. Both chambers of Congress would also meet in session that day.

And someone got past security with a gun.

A line of about five deep went through the magnetometer screening at the Longworth House Office Building. A first officer missed an image on the X-ray machine: a firearm in a bag.

“It was human error,” U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger told NPR.

When the line finished, Manger said a second officer at the checkpoint asked to review the film: “Can we go back? I thought I saw something.”

They caught an image of a gun.

That spurred a frantic hunt: a lockdown, a video review of the security line, a description of an individual of interest and a search. Manger said that 12 minutes later, police spotted the man seen earlier in the line trying to leave the Capitol with a bag. And inside it, they found a gun.

It was a new reminder for the U.S. Capitol Police that despite major improvements since Jan. 6, 2021, when a violent mob ransacked the Capitol, the force still faces a long road to address overall security concerns.
