Police Overtime Pay Benefits And Pensions

When considering police salaries, it’s important to take into account police overtime, healthcare, sick time and vacation benefits, and police pensions.

Federal police receive much more generous health insurance and pension benefits than any other law enforcement personnel. Police officers usually work on holidays and have the option of receiving extra time off credits or overtime pay on those days. There may be other incentive compensation for fluency in a foreign language, holding an associate, bachelors, or masters degree, and attainment of special training certificates.

Detectives in particular earn significant amounts in overtime pay because of the extended hours they work. Uniformed patrol officers earn overtime pay for cases that require working past their usual off-duty time and for appearing to testify in court.

Other benefits that should be taken into account with police salaries are whether or not the agency will pay for additional training and coursework if officers want to go back to school and further their education in law enforcement work.

    Entry And Promotion Qualifications

In most countries, candidates for the police force must have completed some formal education. Increasing numbers of people joining the police possess tertiary education qualifications and in response to this, many police forces have developed a fast-track scheme whereby those with university degrees spend two to three years as a Constable before receiving promotion to higher ranks, such as Sergeants or Inspectors. Police officers are also recruited from those with experience in the military or security services. In the United States, state laws may codify statewide qualification standards regarding age, education, criminal record, and training but in other countries requirements are set by local police agencies. Each local Police agency has different requirements.

Promotion is not automatic and usually requires the candidate to pass some kind of examination, interview board or other selection procedure. Although promotion normally includes an increase in salary, it also brings with it an increase in responsibility and for most, an increase in administrative paperwork. There is no stigma in shunning promotion, as experienced line patrol officers are highly regarded.

Dependent upon each agency, but generally after completing two years of service, officers may apply for specialist positions, such as detective, police dog handler, mounted police officer, motorcycle officer, water police officer, or firearms officer .

Still, for such a hazardous line of work, even in a state with cheap cost of living, these average wages are quite low.

You Desire To Make A Meaningful Impact

Few careers are as rewarding as law enforcement. Police officers spend their days protecting and serving their local communitiesnot stuck in a desk chair in a cubicle. Theyre often motivated by working for something greater than themselves, and they can end each day knowing their time and talents are being well spent. If you’re passionate about helping build a positive police culture in your community, you could make a direct impact.

Mike Ardolf, Law Enforcement Program Coordinator at Rasmussen University and retired special agent for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, says his motivation for starting a law enforcement career comes from a basis in service.

I wanted to work in a profession that had interaction with the community and provides a sense of security when needed, Ardolf says.

While paper-pushing jobs in which the primary concern is supporting your boss bottom line are a dime-a-dozen, your hard work can have a tangible impact on the community youre working with as a police officer.
