General Entrance Requirements For The Academy

  • United States citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for U.S. citizenship prior to application for employment.
  • Minimum age for Academy acceptance is 21. You must be 21 years of age to purchase a firearm and to be hired by an agency there is no maximum age limit.
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Lack of a felony record or outstanding warrants.

To be successful as a participant in the San Diego Regional Academy you will be expected to arrive with a base level of fitness. The Academy Physical Training program is 24 weeks long with Physical Training Sessions 23 times per week. Physical training will consist of speed and distance running, weight training and circuit training. You will be required to pass a Work Sample Test Battery consisting of an obstacle course, dummy drag, 6 foot wall climbs and a timed run.

Taking the time to adequately prepare for the Academy will increase your chance of being successful while greatly decreasing the chance of injury while in the Academy.

All police candidates must attend an approved police training academy. Know that some Florida police departments require candidates to complete all or part of basic training at their own expense. For non-certified candidates, the program is 25 weeks. For those who already hold a Florida Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission Certificate, an eight-week transitional academy is typically available.

Do You Get To Go Home During Police Academy

Depending on where you train to be a police officer, you may or may not get to go home during police academy. For RCMP, your training troop of 32 cadets live at an on-site facility called The Depot for the full duration of training.

While a few municipal training academies have recruits live on the grounds during training, most academies have recruits go home at night. If you are training at an academy where you live on the grounds, going home during the training can be very difficult to balance as it is quite exhausting, both mentally and physically.

Physical Requirements For Police

Many police departments require recruits to pass a physical fitness test. To ensure you pass the test, begin training early, focusing on running, stairs and strength exercises. Most departments will also look at your physical health and will want you to have good vision, hearing, cardiovascular health and a healthy weight-height ratio. You may want to have your hearing and vision checked before applying, and start dieting to manage your weight.
