Theft Of Personal Property From Your Home Or Person

How to File a Police Report Online

If you believe that someone has stolen some of your property either from your house or person, then you should report this to your local police force. It is important to add some caveats to this, however. If you have been the subject of a burglary, then you should report the burglary and the stolen items via a more direct method such as ringing the police rather than submitting an online form.

Similarly, if the item that has been stolen is a firearm then you should report the theft to the Police Non-Emergency hotline rather than reporting it online because a firearm that has been stolen could easily end up causing a serious tragedy.

It is important to stress that you should only report theft of property using the online system if it is theft that is not the result of burglary, violence or any other such offence as they are more serious crimes and should be reported more directly to the police such as phoning or visiting a police station.

    Police Records: The Basics

Requesting a NY State Police & Accident Report

Though this may change on a case-by-case basis, logs of arrests and responses to incidents by the police, search warrants and coroners office reports are typically open to public inspection, while arrest and incident reports may be more difficult to obtain. State laws pertaining to the publics access to police records and other public records vary across the U.S., too. In California, for instance, the California Public Records Act makes detailed arrest logs and certain information from incident logs public. Commonly, similar state laws make common-sense exemptions to public disclosure, granting law enforcement agencies the right to withhold information or documents that may jeopardize a criminal investigation or put someone at risk, for example. Information on juvenile cases is typically protected.

Because police dont charge people with crimes , you wont always find these documents available in the public court system. Unless charges have been filed, these records live at the precinct or in an external archive.

    What’s In A Criminal Record

Let’s break it down and get into the nitty gritty of it.

Since criminal records are public, the information is often used to help potential employers. It’s basically a background check to poke around in. Plenty of businesses are required to do a quick background check, and many that aren’t do it anyways. In today’s society, it’s natural to want to know everything we can about a person before we entrust important assets to them.

Criminal records contain a personal criminal history. Generally, this is a list of criminal offenses that have not been expunged such as traffic tickets, DUIs, or convicted crimes like misdemeanors or felonies. Our search will provide you with this information and more.

Sometimes warrants for the persons arrest will also show up on a police record, depending on where the warrant is from.

    Where To Find Police Records

First off, if you are or were a criminal and have a criminal record, you are entitled to a copy of that record thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. As stated earlier, police records are a matter of public record, therefore they are available for free access to the public. The Freedom of Information Act states that any person has the right to request access to federal agency records or information, except for exemptions that are listed. This means that anyone in the U.S. can request basic information that is considered public record, such as voter’s registration, property deeds, or criminal records.

The U.S. system of recording and storing these police records isn’t always the easiest to navigate. Records can have issues crossing state lines, which is why it’s important to find a database that checks all states and compiles the findings. A lot of people say the U.S. should make it easier and have all records in one pool, but that’s just not how things are done.

Police records are recorded in the states where such crimes occur, then are voluntarily submitted to federal databases for access. Not all crimes are recorded and submitted in this manner though, which is what leads to contrary records. With the CheckPeople search we are able to look through all sources of information quickly so you will be able to save a bunch of time on your search.

How To File A Police Report

If you are involved in an accident, you may need to call the police and file a police report. In most states, if an accident results in death or injury or property damage exceeds a certain threshold then by law you are required to call the police. That threshold can vary depending on whether or not the motorists involved in the accident are insured. In Illinois, for example, the property damage threshold at which police must be called to an accident is usually $1,500. However, if any driver involved in the crash is uninsured then that threshold is just $500.

Even if you think your accident doesnt meet the minimum threshold, it is usually still a good idea to file a police report. Thats because a police report is an official account of the accident and it can have a huge impact on your insurance claim. Remember that even if you call the police and the police dont come to the accident scene you can still visit the police department later and file a report there. Some police departments, such as the Los Angeles Police Department, even allow you to file police reports online so long as it relates to a non-emergency incident.
