How Many People Are Killed By Police

About 1,000 people a year are killed by police officers in the US, according to an independent project that tracks police violence. Most are shot dead.

The majority of the world’s police forces carry firearms, but no developed nation uses them against their citizens as often as officers in the US – and disproportionately against African-Americans, compared with the percentage of the population they represent.

Part of this is to do with gun culture – the US is home to around half of the world’s civilian-held firearms.

In 2020, fewer than 10% of people killed by police were recorded as unarmed.

Rashawn Ray, professor of sociology at the University of Maryland, says: “In most states people can carry guns either on their body or in their vehicles, so that escalates things for police – they instantly perceive that anyone can be a threat.”

In the same year, officers killed more than 20 times as many civilians – and some argue the use of force is disproportionate to the threat, with better training needed to de-escalate situations.

Prof Ray says: “Nine out of 10 calls for law enforcement have nothing to do with violence at all, and while they definitely encounter violent situations that could escalate, often… it’s police officers who are escalating the situation.”

Emergency Vehicle Operations Course

This segment of training begins with classroom lectures on topics including operational guidance, legal principles, officer liability, vehicle dynamics, risk management and the process of decision-making needed for collision avoidance. Next, the students use what they’ve learned in the classroom in practical driving situations that demonstrate the risks involved in emergency response and pursuit driving.

Through the development, understanding and applied knowledge of the vehicle, reading the roadway, driving skills and behaviors promoted during emergency vehicle operations, basic officers are able to successfully control the stress commonly associated with operating an emergency vehicle. They also learn vehicle handling and weight transfer techniques for high speed emergency response and pursuit driving.

All officers receive training in the proper use of tire deflation devices. Students are also trained in driving simulators, which places them in “virtual” situations that law enforcement officers might be faced with. The student must pass each segment of the driving instruction and a comprehensive written examination.

Tips To Get Into The Police Academy

Although the application process involves multiple steps, there are key aspects that will make it easier to get into the academy and start your career. The first step is getting a degree in criminal justice, forensics, or a related field. While you can be accepted with a high school diploma or an associates degree, a bachelors degree will improve your chances due to the higher level of training and education.

You will also want to work on your physical fitness before you start your application. You must pass the fitness exam to become a police officer or a detective. Preparing in advance will help you reach your goals by giving you the physical strength and stamina you need to pass the exam. While physical fitness standards differ for each state, you will want to be able to do pull-ups, push-ups, and related exercises. Building up your stamina by running will also help with your goals.

If you have never handled a firearm, then you may want to take a firearm safety course before entering the police academy. The training will teach you to handle a gun and prevent accidents.

Going through the police academy gives you the training you need to work as an officer and start your career in law enforcement. By taking measures to improve your chances to get into the academy, you will be able to feel confident in your abilities after you start your training.

    Police Officer Hiring Process

The police officer hiring process is much different than that of any other job. It is not simply attending an interview and then being approved for the position. In order to become a police officer, you need to undergo a series of tests and each of them can disqualify you. The entire process is quite competitive and each police department can put more importance on a single element of the process rather than on the other. Nevertheless, the hiring process consists of several elements that are common for each agency no matter if we talk about local, state or federal law enforcement.

Once your application is accepted, you need to be tested in order to prove that you have what it takes to do the job. This includes checking both your general knowledge, writing skills, physical abilities, and your background. Here are the steps that you need to successfully pass through, in order to become a police officer:

    • Physical ability test

The physical ability test checks the fitness of the candidate and their readiness to face the physical challenges of the police officer job. Basically, there are two approaches adopted by the agencies into performing the PAT: the job simulation method and the fitness-based method. In both cases, it is a pass/fail test and the applicant must meet certain criteria in order to pass. Check with the department which of the two approaches they use and train for the test.

    • Medical exam
    • Background check
    • Polygraph test
    • Psychological screening
    • Oral board interview

How To Enter A Police Academy

Getting into a police academy is not an easy task. Most of them require applicants to undergo rigorous examinations and background checks. These tests and checks are done to screen any student who may not be fit to work as a police officer. Furthermore, some police academies accept only students who are already employed by a police department.

The minimum educational requirement for a police trainee is a high school diploma. However, there some police academies that still prefer an applicant with a bachelor or associate degree.

Other requirements necessary to apply for a police academy include a US citizenship and age above 18 or 21 years old, depending on the police department. The United States Capitol Police, however, requires applicants to be at least 21 years of age.

Most academies disqualify candidates who have any criminal backgrounds, or felony offenses from training. They may also conduct a thorough background investigation on any person who wishes to apply.

If the applicant passes all these requirements, he will then have to take various entrance exams police academies carry out. Each police academy has the freedom to formulate its exams and schedule. Hence, an applicant must prepare for the exam made his chosen academy.
