Requesting Time Off As A Police Officer

City limits overtime hours for Minneapolis officers, updates discipline matrix | FOX 9 KMSP

Requesting time off as a newer, more junior officer can prove to be difficult. For majority of police departments, requesting time off requires your submission to go through an approval process up the chain of command, starting with your sergeant.

Days off are usually granted based on staffing for that particular day and seniority. So, if enough officers are scheduled to work and be present, you might be ok. However, there is a magic number of officers that must be staffed each day. So you might find it tough to get everything you seek early on, but know this does get better should you stick it out.

If the number of officers working on a particular day falls short due to officers calling in sick, the department will give out overtime to officers that want to work on their day off to fill in the gap. Maintaining ample staffing is paramount each and every day.

What Is The Refresher Course

The Refresher course is a method that officers may use to revive their LETB certificate to perform law enforcement duties.

Officers leave the profession of law enforcement for various reasons like retirement, taking another job, etc. Sometimes those officers want to re-enter law enforcement, again, for a variety of reasons, such as they miss the profession, a law enforcement job opportunity arises, etc.

I.C. §5-2-1-9 allows a police officer who has left law enforcement for at least two years but less than six years to refresh her/his LETB certificate and begin enforcing the law again. A police officer who has left law enforcement for six years or longer must repeat basic training and cannot refresh his/her LETB certificate.

Police academy requirements vary, but by no means does training happen overnight, Vincent says. Note that the process and requirements may vary from region to region.

For example, if you want to join the Los Angeles Police Department, you must complete seven steps. You fill out their online application and then take a written test. You them submit a personal history statement, which will be used as part of your background investigation. Next you must attend the Candidate Advancement Program and complete the Physical Fitness Qualifier. Youll then take a polygraph and sit for a panel interview, followed by medical evaluation, field investigation , and psychological evaluation.

Police academy programs, which take anywhere from 12 weeks to a year to complete, comprise a variety of coursework, from criminal law to cultural awareness to physical and firearms training.

Vincent says Arlington County recruits must attend a 21-week program at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy, where aspiring officers take basic training in four categories: criminal investigation, legal, patrol, and skills . To graduate, students must pass both physical conditioning and written examinations.

I tell people that if I recruit you to attend the police academy, Vincent says, its probably going to be close to a year of training before youre on the street in a police uniform working alone.

How Long Can A Police Officer’s Shift Be

There currently are no state or federal mandates for how long a police officer’s shift can be, as the needs and capabilities of various departments and agencies vary drastically. For example, smaller departments with fewer officers may rely on overtime to fill shift coverage.

A full-time workweek is 40 hours per week by law, though as essential workers, police officers can legally work more and earn overtime pay. The specific department or a police union typically sets the rules for overtime:

    • Nonunion departments: The administration of a department without a union determines hour shifts or restrictions for its officers.

    • Unionized departments: Most police forces have unions, and hours, shifts and overtime are part of the agreed-upon contract between the police agency and its officers. Unions typically oppose restrictions on the number of hours worked.

Some departments may allow an officer to work up to 18 hours in a 24-hour period. However, balancing the need to staff shifts with providing adequate rest is vital, and law enforcement takes fatigue seriously. Studies in the field show that 10-hour shifts provide the best quality of work-life balance for police officers, with officers getting more sleep than those with traditional eight-hour shifts. Advocates for more standardized hours suggest limiting officers to only 14 hours per day with mandated rest periods on longer shifts.

Are Police Officers Exempt From Overtime

The FLSA provides a partial overtime exemption for law enforcement officers and firefighters who work a work period established by the city of no fewer than seven days and no more than twenty-eight days. The city can establish separate work periods for the police department and the fire department.

Is A Police Officer Entitled To Overtime Pay

A Day in the Life: General Duties Police – NSW Police Force

If a police officer is nonexempt under the FLSA, then they are entitled to overtime pay. This means that employers must pay these workers one and one half times their regular pay for each hour worked past 40 a week.

However, the employer is allowed to set a work period that may impact when police officers are entitled to overtime pay. Laws concerning overtime pay vary from state to state, as well.

To determine if your particular case falls under the FLSA, it is best to consult an experienced attorney.

How Many Hours A Week Do Cops Work

Do most cops work the traditional 40 hours a week? Or do they do that and then stay on call? And if it is 40 hours a week, is it the traditional 8 hrs a day for 5 days, or different?

This varies by department and position. I used to work 4-10s at my old department now I work 5-10s. Some of my coworkers work 5-8s cause they can and want to. I have friends that do 3-12s and an 8. Some friends are investigators are on-call and work 70+ hours one week and ~30 the next week based on case load. Just depends on the department/agency.

Does your schedule factor in the required OT?

With the staffing at my department I’m averaging 50ish hours.

5/8s, 4/10s, 3/12s swapping Saturdays, 3/12s and a float, 4/12s, 5/10s. There are probably as many different schedules as there are different departments, each has its pros and cons. Different assignments in the same department can have different schedules too

Lots of departments do work more than 40hrs a week.

    I work 4-10s. But I wouldn’t call what I currently do “work.”

    Patrol – 3 12s 3 off, 4 12s 4 off. Detectives – 4 10s Admin – 5 8s

At most departments as much as you want to in overtime and occasionally there is mandatory overtime. With court, mandatory training and extra duties OT is pretty normal. I would say my average is 45-50 hours a week if its a slow week.

Nights and days in the same pay period as a regular rotation is a joke… Id quit based on that alone.

Local Agencies Police Officer / Deputy Sheriff

Everyone knows what a cop does, right? Probably to a certain extent. If youve ever received a traffic ticket then you know of at least one duty they perform. But thats an awfully narrow view of what a police officer does, and narrow is not a word you should use in connection with this job.

If you like variety youll be well suited for police work. This is especially true for that first year on the force, the time when you are being exposed to as many different aspects of the job as humanly possible. With police work, youll never be absolutely certain how your day may turn out. Your shift may start out with a bang when your first call propels you down an alley after a robbery suspect, and it may end with the tedious task of lifting a thumbprint from the rear view mirror of a stolen car. You can rest assured that no matter what you do, youll write reports galore at the end of the shift.Speaking of writing reports, have we mentioned yet that law enforcement officers, from every agency, do an awful lot of writing? Do yourself a favor and start paying attention in English class.

    • traffic control
    • securing the scene of a crime
    • interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects
