Do I Need A Criminal Record Check Or A Vulnerable Sector Check

Different employers or institutions require different types of background checks.

A criminal record check simply verifies whether or not you have a criminal record.

A vulnerable sector check is a special type of criminal record check required for situations where you will be in a position of trust or authority over children, the elderly, the disabled, or another vulnerable group.

A vulnerable sector check involves a name-based search of the national repository of criminal convictions, a search of locally held convictions at Halifax Regional Police and a query of the pardoned sex-offender database. In some cases, you may be required to submit your fingerprints if there is a match based on either your name or a combination of your gender and date of birth to a pardoned sex offender record. Applicants with a potential match will be contacted by Halifax Regional Police and asked to come to Police Headquarters to have their fingerprints taken electronically. You can have your fingerprints taken Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Impact On Travel And Other Activities

If the police have your fingerprint records and photos on file, it may be more difficult for you to travel or immigrate. These records may also impact how the police treat you.

Only people who have been involved with the police have fingerprint records. Border guards, police officers, and others may behave differently if they have fingerprint records for you. Border guards may take longer to let you through borders. Police may spend more time with you if they ask you to pull over when you’re driving.

Whats The Process For Getting A Police Information Check

How To Get Fingerprints Done At Police Station

Police information checks are part of the application process for an increasing number of jobs and volunteer positions, especially if youre going to be in a position of authority or working with vulnerable persons. A vulnerable person is defined in the Criminal Records Act as a person who, because of their age, a disability or other circumstances, whether temporary or permanent, is in a position of dependence on others or otherwise at a greater risk than the general population of being harmed by person in a position of authority or trust relative to them.

If you are a resident of Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam, heres what you need to know:

  • You can only get a police information check done by the police force in the community where you live. If you are not a resident of our jurisdiction we will not process your police information check.
  • Police information check forms must be submitted in person either at our main detachment front counter or at one of our four Community Police Stations. Applications sent by mail or email will not be processed.
  • Required forms. All police information check applicants have to fill out a PIC form. If the police information check is for a job or volunteer position involving vulnerable persons, applicants must also fill out the Vulnerable Sector portion of the PIC form.

  • Can I Get My Fingerprints By The Local Authorities In Hangzhou Police Department

I’m applying for my criminal background check report from the FBI in the USA. Is it possible for the local authorities to take the fingerprints for me since they are professionals, or are there agencies that offer such services for foreigners?

Answered by David from United Kingdom | Jul. 21, 2013 03:450ReplyHey Aaron,I am a Chinese who stayed in America for two years. Now I want to visit a country but they ask me to get the no-criminal record when I stayed in the USA. I am already back to China. I visited the local police station but they told me that they couldn’t record my fingerprints because they just did it for the crminals. The FBI needs the fingerprints from the trusted organizations like Chinese police station. But they don’t do it for me. I heard that an American guy who recorded his fingerprints successfully from the local police station in Beijing. Perhaps, you should try at the police station in Hangzhou. Good luck to you!
Answered by Chan from China | Aug. 27, 2017 22:5600ReplyI’m having trouble finding a place in Nanchang to do them. Did you ever manage to get yours done? The US embassy provided a list of some places that will do them, but none are near me. The closest it seems is Xiamen and Fuzhou .
Answered by Nicole | Aug. 28, 2017 01:0200ReplyYou can try to contact with the local PSB of Nanchang to ask if they can offer such service. If it can be done, you don’t need to go to Xiamen or Fuzhou for this. Just have it a try!
