Units Within The Baltimore Police Departments Detective Division

Homicide Section Detectives that work in the Homicide Section investigate cases involving homicide, suspicious deaths, shooting involving police, in-custody deaths, stranger abductions, extortion, and public official intimidation. There are two units in the Homicide Section, the Operations Squad and the Cold Case Squad.

Escape and Apprehension Squad Detectives that work in the Escape and Apprehension Squad investigate cases involving search warrants and wanted fugitives. This squad collaborates often with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. There are two units in the Escape and Apprehension Squad, the Regional Warrant Apprehension Task Force and the Fugitive Unit.

Laboratory Section Detectives that work in the Laboratory Section provide scientific analysis for cases within the Baltimore Police Department. There are four units in the Laboratory Section: Trace Analysis Unit, Drug Analysis Unit, Firearms Examination Unit, and Latent Print Unit.

District Investigations Section Detectives that work in the District Investigations Section investigate cases that involve non-fatal shootings, burglaries, street robberies, and aggravated assaults. There are two units in the District Investigations Section, the Citywide Robbery Unit and the Sex Offender Registry Unit.

Baltimore Police Officer Requirements

There are several minimum requirements that must be met to be considered for a career in law enforcement with the BPD. Its important to note that the BPD emphasizes integrity in its officers, and candidates must be completely truthful throughout the hiring process, and their careers, or risk losing their position. To be considered for the recruiting process, candidates must:

• Be a US citizen
• Be at least 20 years and nine months of age by the hire date for becoming a trainee
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Hold a valid drivers license
• Have a clean driving record with no more than three points and no DUI/DWI convictions within the last five years
• Have an honorable discharge, if a military veteran
• Not have any felony convictions any misdemeanor convictions must be expunged
• Not have used drugs, including controlled substances, narcotics, or marijuana, within three years of hire

Candidates may begin the process of being considered for a position with the BPD by filling out an application qualified candidates will be invited to take the civil service test. Those who pass the written test may continue with the physical agility test followed by a preliminary interview. Candidates who qualify at this stage will then undergo a background investigation, a polygraph examination, psychological and medical examinations, and an interview. Accepted candidates will be invited to the police academy as BPD recruits.

Public Safety Cadet Program

The national, nonprofit Public Safety Cadet program is managed by active law enforcement officers dedicated to preparing young adults for careers and leadership in the public safety profession. The program, sponsored by and functioning locally under the BCoPD, is directed by a committee of BCoPD sworn personnel with the assistance of several interested adult civilians/volunteers.

The PSC program’s goal is to mentor young adults to serve their communities by providing knowledge, skills and practical experiences through education and training delivered by public safety professionals. These experiences build character, leadership development, and appreciation for community services and good citizenship.

PSCs receive basic instruction in various phases of law enforcement, including but not limited to:

• Criminal and traffic law
• Community policing
• Public speaking

PSCs are required to participate in the numerous details performed by their Unit, usually in the following areas:

• Traffic direction
• Training seminars

PSC are governed by a manual of rules and regulations that mirrors BCoPD’s.

MENASHA, Wis. Authorities in Winnebago County helped a teenagers lifelong dream of becoming a police officer by swearing him in as an honorary officer.

13-year-old Chance Van Stippen has been courageously battling brain cancer and has always dreamed about being a police officer and on Friday, with the help of the Fox Crossing Police Department and the Neenah Police Department, Van Stippen was made an honorary officer.

His resiliency and his positivity is something that all of us can admire, said Menasha Police Chief Nick Thorn. Were happy today to be able to make his dreams come true.

Chance participated in several law enforcement activities at the Menasha Police Department and the Fox Valley Technical College Public Safety Center, including deploying a taser, simulation training, and mock vehicle pursuit.

Despite his diagnosis, Chance is still chasing his dreams, a dream his mother says will leave his mark on not only northeast Wisconsin but the world.

It doesnt matter what anybodys opinion is, it doesnt matter whats going on in the world, Chance has a serious passion for police officers and what they do and the impact they make, added Chances mother, Shayla Van Stippen. Ultimately, he just wants to bring good to the world and be a good cop.

Baltimore County Police Academy

Candidates who make it through the hiring procedure and are offered conditional employment with the BPD complete basic police academy training at the Training Academy of the Baltimore City Police Department. The recruit training gives new cops the skills needed to work as a sworn officer in the city. Courses in the 27-week program include firearm training, animal control, ethics, community relations, and victims rights, among many others. After completing basic training, new recruits are assigned to a district and participate in field training for eight weeks. Successful performance in field training leads to a permanent assignment within the BPD.
