Basic Steps To Become A Police Officer In Ohio
- All applicants will have to complete the peace officer basic training in any of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission accredited schools. There will two types of students in the academy, the sworn in peace officer and the open enrollment student. Each one will have to complete at least 579 hours of training in order to be considered to become a cop.
- Appointed out of state police officers who are want to become a peace officer in Ohio can have the basic training waived by apply for a prior equivalent training analysis. The OPOTC will review the records submitted and compare the applicants prior training records to the current Ohio curriculum, if prior training is deemed an equivalent then it will be credited.
- Candidates must then pass the Ohio Peace Officer Certification Test.
- Candidates will have to pass the physical exam that includes both the medical exam to check a candidates overall health and a physical test.
How To Become A Certified Peace Officer

It is the largest police department in the state of Ohio, and among the twenty-five largest in the United States. It is composed of twenty precincts and numerous other investigative and support units. Chief Elaine Bryant assumed leadership of the Division in 2021. Columbus Police Department Information
The CPD has six subdivisions: the investigative bureau, the administration bureau, homeland security bureau, patrol south, patrol north, and support services bureau. The CPD is separated into five zones and has 20 precincts within each zone.3 After serving time in patrol, future law enforcement officers can join one of the CPDs specialized teams which include crisis intervention, community response, hostage negotiators, and the SWAT team.
Columbus residents can get involved in the Citizen Police Academy, offered in Spanish and English. The Citizen Police Academy is nine weeks and covers CPDs community policing philosophy and gives citizens more information about the operation of the police department. The Columbus Police Explorers is a program for youth from ages 14 to 18. Explorers also learn about daily police work and compete in national conferences. There are many other opportunities for community involvement.

COLUMBUS, Ohio As the Columbus Division of Police grapples with community relations, calls for reform, and a surge in youth violence, the department is hoping to build trust one middle school student at a time.
Friday, the Teens and Police Service program hosted its first Summit Day to celebrate the latest group of participants. The mentorship initiative partners at-risk youth with police officers for weekly learning sessions, including drug and violence prevention, conflict resolution, and law enforcement basics. Some of the students choose to join the program, while others are selected by school staff because of their home life or behavior.
I didnt want to be in it because youre in a room with a bunch of cops and its just like cringe, said Sivana Miller, an eighth-grade student at Yorktown Middle School.
I went because my mom made me, added Keniyah Banks, another Yorktown eighth-grade student. I didnt like the police, not one bit. Im sorry, I really didnt. But I love them to death. Man, theyre the best to be around.
The two friends said they not only grew to respect the officers they met, but their TAPS lessons taught them about the risks of some of their behaviors.
They just changed my whole perspective of everything I used to do, Banks explained. I stopped doing a lot of stuff because this could happen, this could lead up to this and I could end up where my dad is right now.

Individuals interested in starting the program should first formally apply to the college and complete the required enrollment steps/processes to include declaring as a Law Enforcement major. Once that is completed, students can meet with an academic advisor and start registering for the first year classes on the Law Enforcement AAS plan of study. This can include full-time, part-time, reserve, special, or auxiliary appointments. Failure to attain a commission within a two-year period from date of academy completion will result in the certification becoming null/void. The CSCC Criminal Justice program has a 95% commission/appointment placement rate average over the past five years and academy staff work closely with students to attain a peace officer commission and related employment during the academy and after completion.
Policy Now Allows Columbus Officers To Have Facial Hair Visible Tattoos
Hoping to bring in more recruits, boost morale and become more relatable to the community, Columbus police is allowing officers to have facial hair and visible tattoos.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant made several policy changes that relax rules for officers wearing hats, allowing tasteful visible tattoos and allows facial hair.
The policy has been in place since Aug. 6.
Kaitlyn Morales has been a Columbus police officer for five years. Morales said she loves her job because she gets to interact with all kinds of different people who she would never get to deal with if she wasn’t an officer.
But what does she possibly love more than her job? Her dozens of tattoos.
I have some that are super personal to me. Some that I just thought were pretty. I have a couple that I just thought would be funny, Morales said describing her tattoos.
Up until now, Morales had to cover her tattoos up with a long-sleeve shirt or wear neoprene sleeves.
I work the west side, particularly the Hilltop. When I say this, and I mean it literally, everyone and their mother has one. I think it makes me more relatable and approachable and gives us something to talk about, Morales said.
The reality is, the majority, of we’ll say this generation, 18-50, facial hair is very common and tattoos are very common, said Columbus Police Sergeant Brian Steel.
At a time when fewer are applying to become Columbus police officers, the goal is to attract more recruits.
