Charges Dismissed Against Detroit Officer Who Fired At Media
DETROIT A judge dismissed charges against a Detroit police officer who was accused of firing rubber pellets at three journalists covering a 2020 protest against police brutality.
Judge Roberta Archer on Tuesday cited a 1931 Michigan law that protects police when an unlawful gathering is declared, the prosecutors office said.
Daniel Debono, a corporal, was charged with assault. An MLive.com photojournalist and two independent photojournalists were struck with rubber pellets after identifying themselves and raising their hands, investigators said.
The prosecution argued that the statute does not apply because the journalists were not a part of the protest, and the protest had been cleared at the time and place of the alleged assault by Cpl. Debono, said Maria Miller of the prosecutors office. An appeal will be considered.
A message seeking comment from Debonos attorney wasnt immediately returned Wednesday.

Types Of Nevada Police Officers
Nevadas Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission designates three categories of officers.
- Category 1. These are the regular cops you are familiar with. Theyre the ones who carry firearms, engage in vehicular pursuits, and arrest suspects. Their training is the most rigorous, and if you want to be a POST-qualified peace officer in this category youll usually need to attend an academy for six months. The minimum is 480 hours of training.
Youll need to be in this category to be a sheriffs deputy, and even university and municipal police agencies get their personnel only from this category.
- Category 2. While you have the same powers and responsibilities as the real cops in this category, you dont get as much training. You only undergo 200 hours of instruction. These are the people guarding school districts, community colleges, and courtrooms. They can also work for the states Department of Agriculture, the Office of the Inspector General, the Nevada Transportation Authority, and the Gaming Control Board.
- Category 3. The officers here are the jail and prison guards. You spend two months and get 160 hours of training to handle inmates.

Police Training Academies In Nevada
Nevadas Basic Training Bureau is responsible for the training process for incoming peace officers. All of the basic training academies in Nevada use the curriculum developed by the bureau, which can last up to 16 weeks. During the program, cadets undergo physical and mental training as well as theoretical classroom learning. All recruits must maintain an 80% or better on their grade average and pass the POST Physical Fitness Test to graduate.
