New York Police Department

The NYPD is one of the most famous police departments in the world, thanks to movies and TV shows. You can apply to the NYPD online, and once you finish the process and enter the police academy you can earn an annual salary of $44,744 as a recruit . But after 6 months, your annual salary jumps to $46,288.

The basic requirements include the following:

US citizen by the day of hire.
21 years old by the day of hire , but not older than 35 unless you have an active military service.
Sixty college credits with a 2.0 G.P.A. from an accredited college or university OR a high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of full-time, active military service in the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge.
A resident of the five Burroughs or the surrounding counties.
Valid New York State drivers license.
Pass drug and alcohol screening.
Pass character and background investigation

The following are causes for disqualification:

Dishonorable discharge from the military.
Felony conviction.
Repeated convictions for an offense demonstrating lack of respect for the law, a lack of good moral character, or a tendency towards violence.

Examination Format And Study Guide

Exam Administration

The first step in the selection process for a position as a NYS Trooper is the competitive written exam.

Several examination dates will be scheduled in each troop area, based upon the applicant flow. Candidates should submit the application as soon as possible.

About two weeks prior to a scheduled exam, candidates who have applications on file will be notified to appear for the exam at a designated center.

Candidates should arrive at the exam site prepared to take the exam and bring with them the exam notice, appropriate identification and two number 2 pencils.

Exam Format and Content

The written examination consists of three components:

Work Styles Questionnaire: 224 short, multiple-choice style questions designed to assess a candidates motivational, value-related and attitudinal characteristics.
Life Experience Survey: 96 multiple-choice questions related to a candidates past history and experience.

Candidates responses to the three examination components will be scored and will determine candidates eligibility to continue on in the selection process for the position of New York State Trooper.

Candidates should plan to spend 5-6 hours at the test site which will involve 4 hours to take the exam and 1 to 2 hours for instructions and administrative procedures.

Syracuse Police Department Seeks Teens Young Adults To Join New Junior Cadet Program

Syracuse, N.Y. Syracuse police have responded to 40% more shootings with injuries over the past year, but at the same time struggled to get more cops on the streets, a department spokesman said.

In an effort to attract, train and keep city residents as future police officers, the city is getting creative by introducing a new junior cadet program.

City of Syracuse residents, ages 16-24 with a high school diploma or GED and who want to become a police officer can apply to the program.

Applications are due this Friday.

Applicants must have no felony convictions, and have not used any illegal drugs in the last three years and also have not used Adderall unlawfully in the past year, Syracuse police spokesman Lt. Matthew Malinowski said. Candidates also must agree to take the Onondaga County Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff Civil Service exam when eligible, he said.

Its a recruitment effort, Malinowski said. Its hard to keep someones interest in law enforcement from after they graduate high school to the time theyre eligible to take the police exam.

You must be at least 19 1/2 years old to take the police exam.

The 50-week Junior Cadet Program includes 20 hours a week of classroom instruction and physical training, and 20 hours per week of work experience throughout the police department.
