How To Get A Copy Of A Police Report In Texas

Dallas PD | Mounted Unit Makes Strides Into History

Youve just been involved in a car accident. You need to get a copy of the accident report. There are several ways you can go about doing this. And the procedures differ depending on whether your accident happened in Dallas, Fort Worth, or the other cities in the DFW area.

Before you Leave the Accident Scene.

Once the officer has conducted the investigation, the officer will give each driver a small form. On this form is a Case ID number written on the top. Also on this form are instructions on how to obtain the accident report.

Make sure you keep this form handy. You will need to refer to it later.

When Will the Report be Ready?

The investigating officer will tell you that the report will be ready in about 10 business days. However, it will probably be completed before then. I have seen reports completed in three days or so for less complex accidents. More complex accidents or accidents involving a fatality will usually take longer just depending on the circumstances.

But, on average, the report is ready in about 5 business days or so.

Requesting the Report directly from the Police Department.

You can request the accident report directly from the police department that made the report. You can do it by mail or in person. Instruction on how to do this will be on the form given to you at the accident scene by the police officer.

Public Police Records In Dallas

Police records include police accident reports, arrest reports and incident reports. Not all of these are public. Although court documents are presumed public, police records are not part of court records. According to the Dallas Police Department, the department tries to make as much information available to the public as possible without violating state and federal laws prohibiting the release of sensitive and confidential information.

Generally, the Dallas Police Department filters report information that is released to the public to take privacy concerns into account. It excludes the following categories of information:

  • sexually oriented offenses
  • identifying vehicle information in certain offenses

For more information about the type of police records the department considers private, call 214-671-3148.

Since the Dallas Police Department releases police reports as rapidly as possible, they often contain preliminary information. Therefore, they can contain errors, erroneous information or amended information.

Dallas City Officials Have Removed Critical Police Report Information From An Online Database And More Redactions Might Be On The Way

Dallas Open Data Portal allows the public to access information from a variety of local data such as the financial budget and expenditures.

But data collected from the Dallas Police Department, such as crime reports and 9-1-1 calls, has many concerned about privacy.

The citys Office of Data Analytics and Business Intelligence has removed some names, phone numbers and addresses from the Open Data Portal, but at a city council hearing Monday, officials recommended removing most identity information.

The recommendations include: removing Personally Identifying Information from all public safety data files currently published and all files on the portal and delaying publishing data on Active Police Calls by at least 24 hours.

Hopefully it would encourage people to make reports about something that has happened or speak without concern, Dr. Brita Andercheck, director of the citys Office of Data Analytics and Business Intelligence said.

The agency argues removing information would protect minors and victims of sexual violence. Cities like Arlington and Irving already shield the names of people who report crimes.

We talk very often about making information available, not less. And making things more transparent, not less, said Council member Cara Mendelsohn, who serves as vice chair of the Public Safety Committee. I just don’t feel like there should have been a decision that didn’t get council input and didn’t get community input.
