Police Officers : How to Train to Become a Police Officer

I am pleased to announce the phased reopening of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and POST Commission facilities. As you are all aware, current health concerns are compounded by the realities of a large residential law enforcement academy. In order to reopen as responsibly as possible, Governor Lee has approved us to begin training in very limited groups.

Please note that all students will undergo initial Covid-19 testing and periodic screening thereafter. Students attending Specialized classes will be required to reside on campus and will not be permitted to leave campus until the completion of training. Students attending POST Transition School or Basic Law Enforcement School will be required to reside on campus and will not be permitted to leave campus during the training week. They will be allowed to return to their homes on weekends but will be retested or screened upon their return for the next weeks training.

POST Commission employees will continue to provide support to agencies by working from home. The physical facilities will remain closed to visitors unless an appointment has been specifically arranged. If you have a question regarding LEOSA, please contact 741-4461.

The Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy was authorized by the 1963 General Assembly for the purpose of training state, county and city law enforcement officers. The Academy was brought under the Department of Safety in 1983.

Confronting Implicit Bias in the New York Police Department

The basic educational requirement for a police trainee is a high school diploma. However, there some police academies that still prefer an applicant with a bachelor or associate degree.

Some other requirements necessary to apply for police training include a US citizenship and age above 18 or 21 years old, depending on the police department. The United States Capitol Police, however, requires applicants to be at least 21 years of age.

Candidates who have any criminal backgrounds or felony offenses are automatically disqualified from training. A thorough background investigation will be conducted to any person who wishes to apply.

If the applicant passes all these requirements, he is then required to take various entrance exams carried out by police academies. Each police academy has the freedom to formulate its own exams and schedule. Hence, an applicant must prepare for the exam created specifically by the academy he is applying to.

After going through all these, the candidate is now ready to go through six months to a year of intensive training.

Every state, either through legislation or administratively by the state Peace Officer Standards and Training agencies, establishes the basic number of hours and the curriculum for recruit and in-service training for law enforcement officers.

The following examples illustrate how each state’s requirements for mental health and de-escalation training at the recruit level vary:

  • Utah requires a cadre of certified Crisis Intervention Team-trained officers in all jurisdictions. CIT training is a 40-hour curriculum, to be completed in a one-week 35 period, based on the Memphis Police Department Crisis Intervention Team mode
  • The State of Washington mandates that every new full-time law enforcement officer employed after July 1, 9 2017, complete eight hours of CIT training
  • In 2015, California enacted legislation that requires recruits to complete 15 hours of training on “Persons with Disabilities,” and requires that all recruits successfully complete the associated scenario or risk failing the academy

Anything that teaches you to observe and assess an environment is extremely useful. To act in the heat of a moment, you have to make a decision. To make a decision, you have to understand the situation. To do that, you have to observe, McKenna says. Most of our training is focused on response to an attack. But the best officers make a habit of assessing every environment until its done subconsciously. Habits like that can save your life.

Physical activity is another aspect of police training you can do at all stages of the career path. Being physically healthy improves your survivability, the likeliness that you will recover from a wound and even the sharpness of your mental activity, McKenna says.

Police detectives usually require a bachelors degree as well as experience in street patrol.

County law enforcement typically consists of a sheriff and several deputies who serve warrants, subpoenas, and respond to rural civil disputes. Bailiffs and constables are under the sheriffs department and often serve the courts.

State law enforcement officers patrol highways, interstates, and county roads the jurisdiction of a state patrol officer is designated to a region of the state and includes those jurisdictions covered by city and county officers. Each law enforcement agency, no matter the size, has specialized units such as narcotics and SWAT, and offer specialized training through the academy for each unit.
