How To Prepare For Police Academy

I signed up for the police academy in Honduras | Day 1 (EXTREMELY HARSH)

A career in law enforcement gives you the chance to give back to your community by preventing crime and assisting citizens who need help. When a police department selects your application for further review, you will be asked to attend a training program called the police academy. The police academy is a test of your physical fitness combined with academic coursework and training in pursuit driving and firearms ability. Police academies differ depending on who runs them, but you can make some general preparations and practice the skills youll need.

1

Stop smoking, if you currently smoke, as soon as youre asked to attend police academy. Smoking will make it more difficult for you to complete your training. If you drink alcohol, consider stopping or cutting back.

2

Consult your doctor and ask him whether youre fit to attend police academy, especially if you have a condition that may affect your physical abilities.

3

Buy a pair of high-quality running shoes. Youll need to run throughout much of your training, so you need shoes that can stand up to rigorous activity. Ask a store clerk to help you find the right shoes if youre not sure what to buy.

4

Ask your police department for a list of required supplies or clothing. Purchase the items and take them with you to training each day. For example, you may need to buy workout apparel of a certain color.

What Is The Police Written Exam

Register for the 2019 Citizens Police Academy

The written portion of the police testing process is meant to determine if the applicant possesses the foundational skills necessary to perform the work of a police officer. The police academy will provide training in search and seizure, probable cause, and reasonable suspicion. However, there is not enough time in the academy to teach basic skills such as math, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension. It is expected that applicants bring these basic skills with them. A police officer who has such poor spelling that they cannot write a legible police report will find it difficult to do the job. Therefore, a police department says come to us with basic skills and we will teach you the rest.

Police written tests are not unlike college entrance exams such as an ACT or SAT. In general, police written exams cover reading comprehension, spelling, math, grammar, and analytical skills. The written test can also include a report writing test. Generally, a passing score is 70% or better. A higher result will place you better in the following stages of the selection criteria. Therefore, it is advisable to invest some time and money in your proper preparation. Many departments have a study guide that can be beneficial as a starting point. Below, you will find more ideas on how to prepare. We put together a free Mini-Course to help you Pass the Police Exam.

Police Academy Allowed Students To See How Officers Respond To Situations

Cambridge Middle School students had the opportunity to experience what being a police officer was like when they participated in the inaugural Cambridge Youth Citizens Police Academy.

The goal of the academy was to strengthen relationships between us and the kids,” said Ryan Oliver, the school resource officer with the Cambridge Police Department.

Jazlynne Loy, Jasper Payton, both 11, and Gunner Goodman, 13, along with 10 other students spent four days a week for nearly three weeks bonding with and learning from officers from the CPD and the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Students received hands-on experience in a variety of law enforcement tasks. During the first week, students went through a leadership course with Lt. Melanie Appleman of the Highway Patrol, learning to march in formation, defense tactics, handcuffing and restraints, use of force and what it means, and crime scene investigation with the FBI.

With the FBI, students went through a mock crime scene and completed shoe casting, lifted finger prints and were shown how to investigate the scene.

Gunner, who wanted to participate because he wants to be a police officer, said handcuffing and restraints along with learning to talk someone down when entering a building were his favorite activities.

Jazlynne said her favorite thing was the tour of the police station.

“They take calls and stuff and go out and to save people,” Jazlynne said, adding she didn’t realize the officers did so much.

How Long Is Police Academy Training

Every police academy is structured a little bit differently but at the end of the day, most of the policies are very similar. The average police academy requires recruits go through 800 hours of training before they can graduate and be sworn in. While 800 hours may only round out to be about 5 months if operating on a 40 hour work week, a lot of academies actually require about 6-8 months of total training.

Similar to other industries, officers must meet continuing education requirements in order to renew their license. For example, Minnesota police officer requirements mandate a minimum of 48 hours of continuing education within the three-year licensing period in order to maintain their license.

In addition, active officers are required to train annually in use of force and once every five years in emergency vehicle operations/pursuit driving. Specialized training may also be directed by your police department based on federal and local needs. Departments might also incentivize other education opportunities to encourage their officers forward. Additional training or credentials may be required for those looking to climb the police ranks.
