The Second Step Is The Process Of Writing The Petition
Writing A Good Petition
Your petition can be on paper or online, or both. We have a list of websites that help you build internet petitions. There is also an example paper petition below.
State clearly what change you want to make
Make this realistic and concrete. For example, rather than saying clean up our streets,, say employ more street cleaners and provide more public bins.
Direct the demand to the right people
For example, if you want to extend the opening hours at your local council-run library, direct the petition to someone in the council. If you want a change to national policy, target a government department or specific ministers or MPs. Try to identify a specific individual decision-maker or small committees to address the petition to, rather than a whole big organisation.
See below for specific information on petitioning Brighton & Hove City Council and petitioning the government.
Include accurate information and evidence
To get a lot of signatures you will need to persuade people who dont already know a lot about the issue. For example, to persuade people to support a petition to install a zebra-crossing, include information about the number of people who need to cross at that place, and any accidents that have happened.
Make sure it is a clear record of peoples opinion
Write clearly
People need to understand what they are signing quickly and easily. Make sure your petition is clear, accurate and concise. Do not use overly formal or legalistic language.
What Does Freedom Of Petition Mean
The freedom of petition is enshrined in the First Amendment, which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
In other words, Americans have the right to express their opinions to their government and to ask it to right a wrong or correct a problem.

Why Start A Petition
Dating back to the reign of King Edward I, thirteenth century England, the presentation of a petition acted as a trigger for the creation of laws. Public petitions can be an important avenue for those who wish to influence parliamentary representatives. A well documented and supported petition will always have “persuasive” influence in all spheres of public policy making .
Petitions to other targets can also help to form or shape public opinion and ultimately bring about change. A successful petition will complement a campaign strategy that includes direct lobbying, letter writing and media exposure. GoPetition provides important resources to complement your overall campaign strategy.

If you have a burning desire to elicit change in your community, a petition can be a powerful tool. Armed with supporters, you can take your petition to the appropriate authorities and build a solid case for your cause. When thinking about how to write a petition, it’s important to keep one thing in mind: specificity. This isn’t the time for blanket statements or wishy-washy demands. It’s the time for a detailed call to action and thorough research in support of your cause. Believe it or not, all that can be wrapped up in a few tidy paragraphs.
The great thing about petitions is that they can be delivered via hard copy or an electronic link. Each of the steps below will help you create a strong document to share with others.

Am I Entitled To An Attorney
Both petitioners and respondents in family offense cases are entitled to court-appointed attorneys if they are “indigent” . Only the Judge can decide if you qualify for an attorney. The Judge may not appoint an attorney unless you ask for one. You can ask for one at any time. You can also try to find an attorney on your own. A list of legal services offices appears below. If your case goes to trial, you may need an attorney.
What If I Decide Not To Pursue The Order Of Protection
You may change your mind once you have started the case. If you decide not to pursue the order of protection, you may wish to come back to court or send a letter asking that your petition be withdrawn “without prejudice.” This means that if you change your mind again, and wish to re-file at a later date, you can raise the same allegations again in a new petition. You can always come back to court if a new incident occurs.

The Supreme Court Ruling
Seila Law appealed again, and in March 2020, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case. They dealt with two questions:
In June, the court issued its decision. Overturning the Ninth Circuit, it ruled the president is free to fire the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau without cause. The agency’s leadership by a single director removable only for inefficiency, neglect, or malfeasance violates the separation of powers, but that provision is severable from the Dodd-Frank Act, wrote Chief Justice John Roberts in his opinion for the Court.

Can I Ask For Custody Of Or Visitation With My Children
1) Custody: You can ask the court to order that the respondent not interfere with custody of your children as part of the order of protection. This order will last for as long as the order of protection does. You may also file a separate petition for custody. The clerk will help you file a petition for custody. Either parent can file a petition for final custody at any time.
2) Visitation: The court may order visitation for either parent as part of the order of protection. The court can specify times for the visits and safe places to exchange the child, such as a police precinct or friend’s home. If necessary, the court can order supervised visits. The visitation order will last only as long as the order of protection. Either parent may file a separate petition for visitation at any time. However, the court may direct that a separate petition be filed to determine this issue.
What Should I Put On My Petition
Write down as many details as possible. In order to obtain an order of protection you must state that a family offense occurred. Many actions are family offenses, such as when a person verbally, physically, emotionally, or sexually abuses you, or threatens to hurt you. Describe when each incident occurred, where it occurred, what happened, whether you were injured , and whether weapons were used. It is best to include the most recent incident, the first incident and the worst incident. If there was verbal abuse, tell the clerk the exact words the respondent used. Tell the clerk if there is criminal court involvement and if there were earlier orders of protection. Before you sign the petition, read it carefully and tell the petition clerk if anything important has been left out. Make sure the petition is accurate and fully states what you want to tell the Judge.
What can I ask for in my petition? Most temporary orders of protection say that the respondent must not assault, menace, or harass you, but you can ask for additional terms. You must tell the petition clerk specifically what you would like the Judge to order. Some of these things may be in the temporary order and some may be in the final order. You can ask for:
1) Stay away: The court can order the respondent to stay away from you, your home, your job, your children, your children’s school or any other place or person the court finds necessary.

What’s The Difference Between A Temporary And A Final Order Of Protection
A temporary order of protection is issued on the day you file for an order of protection before the respondent is served with the papers. It only lasts until the next time that you are in court. The court usually will extend the temporary order at each court date until the case is over. If a final order of protection is issued, this occurs at the end of the case after the Judge finds that a family offense was committed or the respondent agrees. A final order lasts for two or five years. A final order of protection can also include:
1) Restitution: If the respondent damaged any of your property , the court can order the respondent to pay damages up to $10,000. You will have to prove the value of what was damaged.
2) Medical expenses: The court can order the respondent to pay for any medical expenses arising from the abuse.
3) Participation in a Program: The court can order the respondent to participate in services, such as a batterer’s education program, or make referrals for drug or alcohol counseling.
