Police Academy Training What You Need To Know

Police academy: Basic training

Law enforcement agencies across the country help keep our communities safe and play a vital role in society. In order to get them ready for this important role, the training process they have to go through to become a police officer is far from easy. The training at the police academy prepares them for just about anything and everything that might occur during their career to ensure they are well equipped and well trained in order to serve and protect.

Most people dont really know what type of training police officers go through during the academy. Making the public aware of what police academy training involves can be helpful to people who are interested in becoming a police officer or uneasy about the safety of their communities and the qualifications of their communitys officers.

Acquire A Degree Or Academy Training

The requirements for this step will vary substantially depending on the state in which you plan on becoming a police officer. Some states do not require their officers to be college-educated, even if they may prefer it. Other states, like Minnesota, an Associates degree or equivalent training is one of the requirements to become a police officer.

Generally speaking, the training process for aspiring police officers follows two routes:

Since police officer requirements differ, youll want to be sure to check with the agency that sets the standards for law enforcement training and licensure in your area. Some also have arrangements for military reciprocity, allowing candidates who served in the military to follow a different process in acknowledgement of the training they already have.

Whichever path you take, your training will include classroom instruction in state and local laws, covering topics like constitutional law, civil rights and police ethics. Recruits also receive training and supervised experience in areas such as patrol, traffic control, firearm use, self-defense, first aid and emergency response.

Police Academy Required Criminal Background Check

The goal of the background check is to evaluate whether or not you have the moral, ethical and legal character essential to someone with the honor of carrying a weapon and badge. This means that the background checks given to applicants are extremely thorough. From the time the application is sent in, applicants are being judged. Academies are looking for those who are thorough and responsible therefore applications should be filled out accurately, completely, and in a timely fashion. Preliminary investigations will look into criminal history as well as: education, residential history, employment history, driving record, credit score. There is a chance that the police academy will question the applicants friends, family, past employers, and former teachers to gather information on work ethic and overall character.

The Defining Moment Of Police Academy

For many new recruits, the most intimidating part of police academy is their first encounter with the instructors.

Once recruits have been introduced to their instructors, they will be quickly whisked away to take part in the process of Reflection:

They will bring them out into the hallway, theyll have them do push ups, sit ups, wall sits. Various other forms of exercise to intentionally break them down, so they can build them back up in the form of a police officer. Sergeant Paul Davis

If the process of reflection seems a lot like day-one in the military, thats entirely by design. The instructors may seem harsh, unpleasant and generally intimidating to be around, but its vital for new recruits to get used to having superior officers and a rigid chain of command.

Many trainees have limited career experience, especially in such a physically and mentally demanding job as the police force. Learning to handle pressure from the outset could save the lives of fellow officers in the future.

The Need For Police Academy Training

Graduation Day at OC Police Academy

Police academy training is a necessary step in preparing police officers to deal with the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the job. Police officers dont just arrest criminals, they are also entrusted with upholding the law which is why they must be able to understand, interpret, and enforce state and local laws in their area. For these reasons, and many more, the police academy is an important step in the process of becoming a police officer.

The perception of police officers has been controversial recently, but more importantly, a new challenge is arising. Recruiting and retaining police officers has grown to be a big challenge among law enforcement. Why? Read the answer here.

In regards to the age limit, most police academies prefer that applicants be under the age of 36 years old. This is due to the police departments required retirement age of 56. Those 36 and older may still apply but will most likely only be eligible for part-time positions upon graduation.

*EXCEPTION: Applicants with prior active military duty are given leniency in regards to age.

No matter which program you choose, before beginning work at a police department, you will have to enter a police academy for formal training. This training will consist of various elements that prepare you for life as a police officer, including training it the classroom, field training that walks you through the rigors of the day-to-day work, and in-service training that allows you to begin working with the public on a probationary basis. Heres more about police academy training:

Classroom education

The classroom curriculum will focus on a variety of subjects, ranging from the law itself to administrative and department procedures. Cadets will also learn not just what the law is, but how to apply it in the real world. For example, a police officer may know that probable cause is required for a warrant to conduct a search, but what about the exceptions where a warrant isnt needed? Or what should the officer do or say if an individual contests the validity of the warrant? Much of this classroom training will be necessary before field training can take place or to put the hands-on skills into context.

Field training

In-service training

When you have successfully completed the hiring process, you are a few steps closer to becoming a police officer but you still have two more phases to go through. The first one is the Police Academy. There you will undergo a lot of physical and theoretical training and learn how to use guns and apprehend criminals. You will receive knowledge about different laws and law enforcement procedures as well as acquire practical skills in driving, first aid, etc.

Not all candidates who enter the Academy finish their studies. You may be rejected due to bad performance, while some candidates give up themselves as they find it too difficult to complete.

A CPA provides an excellent opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the procedures, responsibilities, demands and laws officers face

Its a tough time to be a cop. Typically, when members of law enforcement watch the latest police video to hit the mainstream media, we have one of two reactions:

a. That was a good arrest . I would have done the same thing.b. What the $%& *?! What were they thinking?! Another idiot tarnishing the badge!

Unfortunately, the general public seems much more inclined to the latter reaction. More unfortunately, this perception creates more suspicion, hostility and fear toward law enforcement as a whole. At the root of many of these negative emotions is a basic lack of knowledge about law enforcement. We tend to fear what we dont understand.

A Tool to InformSo how do we, as police leaders, counter the misconceptions, fear and hostility toward law enforcement? One way is by seeking to educate an uninformed or misinformed public.

Make no mistake: Theres no light switch solution or immediate fix. Negative public perception is an elephant that can only be eaten one bite at a time. It will take dedication and continued effort a Herculean task, perhaps, but not impossible. The creation of a Citizens Police Academy is a great way to educate the community we serve, especially in smaller jurisdictions.
