How Long Is Police Academy Training
Every police academy is structured a little bit differently but at the end of the day, most of the policies are very similar. The average police academy requires recruits go through 800 hours of training before they can graduate and be sworn in. While 800 hours may only round out to be about 5 months if operating on a 40 hour work week, a lot of academies actually require about 6-8 months of total training.

Different Types Of Police Academies
The type of academy a recruit attends has a great deal to do with how the day-to-day life of a recruit may be structured. In some states, police training is decentralized and conducted at local community colleges or academies.
These academies tend to reflect a more collegiate atmosphere. In others, there may be one police academy that provides law enforcement training for the entire state. Some police agencies may host their academy.
Law enforcement agencies that hold their academies tend to have the most rigid training because their recruits are also hired as employees. This allows the agency to exert more control over their recruits and impose stricter disciplinary standards.
These academies are usually run similar to a military-style boot camp, where push-ups, leg lifts, and other forms of physical exertion are used as means of correcting even minor infractions.

Does The Police Academy Cost Anything
For many police recruits, attending the academy is not only free, but it will also earn them a salary. That’s because they have already been hired as police officers, and the academy, generally run by the hiring agency or the state in which they will be working, is considered part of the new job. These officers can expect to earn either their starting salary in full or a fraction of it, with the remainder kicking in upon graduation.
While many states, including Washington and Oregon, require recruits to be offered a jobbefore completing the academy, others allow aspiring officers to attend stand-alone academies, generally offered by community colleges and local tech schools. These programs do require students to pay tuition, which again will vary depending on the location and institution. The Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Wayne County Community College in North Carolina, for example, costs around $2,000 to attend. Some programs may also charge extra fees for things like the required background check, fingerprinting, application for state certification, physical evaluation and uniforms.
Whats Covered In Academy Training
Local agencies, such as the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, dictate the level of training required to become a police officer in their region. Meet The Physical Fitness Requirements

These forms of physical exercise are a great way to instill both mental and physical discipline. They also teach you to push through pain and discomfort to accomplish a task, and this can help you survive a violent encounter when you get to the road.
Take this part seriously right from the beginning. You can’t graduate from the academy in some states without passing a physical fitness test. The test can include wall and fence climbing, sprinting, an obstacle course, and body drags.

Yes, however, it is strongly discouraged. The recruit training program is designed to be a rigorous program with challenging physical and academic requirements. The physical demands involve not only fitness training but also skills training, such as defensive tactics, firearms, and emergency vehicle operation, all of which require a high degree of stamina and concentration. The recruit training program also requires a great deal of non-academy time for homework, study, and preparation for the next training day. Similarly, please note that the goal of the academy is to prepare you for performance on the street and your career as a police officer. Retention of the knowledge and skills obtained in the academy is critical to success on the street. Insufficient rest and inadequate time to study and prepare will severely and negatively impact retention and application. As a result, due to concerns about your attentiveness and safety during the training and due to our desire that you successfully complete the training and have success as an officer, we strongly discourage working during the academy training.

What Are The Police Academy Exams Like
During your weeks of training, youre preparing for a series of exams. In most academies, you take around 14 written exams, plus 4 practicals on firearms, defence tactics, driving, and first aid.

How To Prepare For The Police Academy
The course syllabus is extensive. To get through it successfully, candidates must be prepared. Here are some ways you can navigate through the course with success.
First keep fit. Yes, you may have succeeded in the police officer exam, but your physical strength and endurance are now going to be tested much further. Go to the gym, build strength and cardiovascular capacity to maximize your endurance on the field. You should do strength-based exercises at least three-times weekly, and cardiovascular exercises daily. However, you may tweak this recommendation based on your own activity / inactivity levels.
Second, build teamwork skills. No police officer goes it alone. To succeed at both the police academy and in your future career as a police officer, you must be able to build and maintain personal relationships and this includes working effectively within teams. Sometimes this can be difficult, particularly if its not something you like or are used to. But it is something that you need to work on and its better to start now rather than trying to resolve it when things are too late.

The MPTC does not maintain a list of chiefs who are willing to sponsor students however, the sponsoring chief does not need to be the chief of police from the municipality in which you reside.
Any municipal or University of Massachusetts chief of police, or colonel of the Environmental Police, may sponsor an individual not hired by a police department to attend a full-time police academy.
