When you decide to pursue your career by going through the police academy, you will learn relevant skills based on your goals and the needs of the police. The academy trains in criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms safety, first aid, policing, and related topics. The exact standards and programs available through the police academy depend on the state. What Tests Do I Need To Pass To Become A Police Officer
With no federal standards for the minimum requirements for becoming a police officer, each state has its own testing methods to determine eligibility for the job. However, there are some basic criteria for police hiring qualifications such as being at least 21 years old with a high school diploma or GED equivalent and at least two years of higher education.

THE POLICE VALUES
Similarly to the core competencies, the police values are a key part of the basic behavioural guidelines for any police employee. As one of the most esteemed and respected organisations in the world, the UK Police naturally have a number of values that they expect all candidates and employees to abide by, along with a strong code of ethics. In the past, the police have largely focused on the competencies of candidates rather than on their values as a person. While these values were still important, they played a secondary role. Now, the police are recognising that its extremely important to hire candidates with strong values and ethics, and the new selection process is a reflection of this.
THE NEW COMPETENCIES
The new police core competencies are as follows:
- Emotionally Aware
- Analyse Critically
- Innovative and Open Minded

Maximum Age Requirements For Law Enforcement Candidates
It may come as a surprise that most agencies do not a maximum age requirement for their candidates. It is also interesting that the reason some agencies have a maximum age limit does not have to do with a candidates ability to pass the physical ability test but rather they want to make certain that a newly hired candidate can retire with full benefits. An agency may have a maximum age for someone starting out because that is the latest someone could start with their agency and still retire with full benefits when they reach the threshold for mandatory retirement in that agency.
For states that do have a maximum age limit, the age at which you can start your law enforcement career, It is generally around 34-37 years of age.
Exceptions are made for military veterans. In the New York Police Department, for example, the maximum age to sit the initial exam is 35. If you have had active military service, you can deduct six years from that age or in other words you can apply for the job at the age of 41.

Job Outlook For Ontario Police Officers
The labour market conditions for police officer jobs are currently Average. This indicates that these jobs are not difficult to find nor are they necessarily in abundance. Salaries have increased at a slower rate compared to jobs rated as Above average, but faster than those rated as Below average.
According to the Job Bank, employment growth and retirement will lead to a moderate number of new positions. In other words, the balanced labour market from 2016 – 2018 means there have been as many jobs available as there have been job seekers.

The Physical Fitness Qualifier And Candidate Advancement Program
In order to better prepare for the exam and the physical demands of the academy, you are required to attend the Candidate Advancement Program and complete the Physical Fitness Qualifier . You must complete the PFQ at least once prior to appointment. Your goal is to score 50 or higher on the PFQ and you are encouraged to take it as many times as you like. If you are struggling to reach the goal of 50 you must attend CAP to get tips and training from our recruitment officers.
The PFQ consists of four events: 1) maximum sit-ups in one minute, 2) 300-meter sprint, 3) maximum push-ups in one minute, and 4) 1.5 mile-run. This is the same physical fitness test that recruit officers take the third day of the Police Academy.
The Academy Physical Training Program is intense and demanding, the first physical fitness test occurs during the first week of the Academy. It is critical that candidates don’t wait until they are in the Academy to get into good physical shape. It is recommended to begin a physical conditioning program as soon as you apply.
Applying To The Academy
The standards to apply for the police academy may vary slightly by state however, certain standards apply to most states. The key standards to apply to the academy include:
- A valid drivers license
- U.S. citizenship
- An appropriate age, which is either 18 or 21 years old
- A high school diploma or higher
- A background check
- Biometric tests, such as your fingerprints
- An academic test, which is called the Law Enforcement Examination
- A drug test
- A psychological evaluation
- An application
After you submit your application for review and pass the appropriate tests to qualify for entrance into the police academy, you will start learning the relevant skills for your career. Keep in mind that your states academy may require you to pass a fitness exam and to provide details about your health as part of the process. Certain mental health or medical conditions may prevent you from being allowed into the academy. You should also keep in mind that a bachelors degree in criminal justice or a related field will improve your chances of being accepted into the police academy.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Section 83 of the Comprehensive Ontario Police Services Act, 2019, stipulates a person appointed as a police officer must:

This certificate is valid for 2 years. That includes all documents in Part A and the Part B, Part C testing.
Seven: You’re Almost At The Finish Line: Undergo A Field Investigation And Security Assessment
The final step in the application process is a field investigation and security assessment. The RCMP will conduct a thorough investigation into your background to help assess your suitability. If successful, you will receive your security clearance.
Once you have passed all the application and assessment steps you will be contacted to attendthe RCMP Cadet Training Program.

Local Needs Of Police Services
Apart from the competencies, individual police services may also require certain special skills and abilities in order to address issues pertaining to the service or the community. A local need may be a second language, a special type or level of computer skills or prior experience in working with victims and/or members of a vulnerable community.
Prepare For The Academy
Once accepted into a police academy, you must complete a rigorous physical training schedule. Many academy cadets drop out or are released because they are unable to maintain the physical training requirements. The Los Angeles Police Department Academy recommends that applicants prepare by running continuously for at least 30 minutes daily before entering the academy. Recruits must also complete various physical activities such as pushups, situps and pullups.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer In Toronto
It takes 24 weeks to complete the prescribed police training and become sworn in as a 4th class constable. As cadets-in-training, new recruits attend a three-week orientation at the Toronto Police College followed by a 12-week session at the Ontario Police College. Training concludes with nine weeks of training at the Toronto Police College.
What Is The Purpose Of The Academy
The Citizens Police Academy aims to increase citizens understanding of the CPS, its role, daily operations, police limitations and powers through:
- Presentations, followed by open discussions with police officers, CPS volunteers and various representatives from specialty units.
- Hosted tours of Calgary police facilities.
These presentations provide insight into the diverse nature of policing in Calgary from the various units across CPS.
At the conclusion of the program participants will receive a certificate showing that they have completed the courses.
For those interested in learning more about policing as a possible profession this program could be helpful. Those may benefit from the insight if unsure if policing is for them however the Citizens Police Academy is not used in the CPS recruiting and selection process. What Does Police Academy Training Entail
Police academy training involves educating, preparing, and training recruits in many different areas. It is important that the training is diverse in order to properly prepare officers for their day-to-day activities on the job and for the unexpected.
Most police academies have programs that involve both classroom-type settings as well as intense physical training. They also require a strict lifestyle to be adopted, such as abiding by strict rules pertaining to appearance, sleeping and eating schedules.
Physical training for someone in the academy is intense to say the least. Fitness tests are performed regularly in order to evaluate where each potential officer is at and how far they have come since the beginning. Academy training consists of body strengthening and running regimens to ensure that each officer can be ready to move quickly without much notice. There is also firearm training and range time to properly educate and train officers if they need to use their firearm. There may be additional weapons training, including training with tasers and pepper spray.
The classroom setting of police academy training involves educational courses regarding safety, psychology, local and state laws, protocols, and even some light medical knowledge. All of the academic training that takes place helps officers to become more knowledgeable about keeping themselves and their community safe.
Toronto Police Officer Application Process
The process outlined below belongs to the Toronto Police Service. Most police agencies in Ontario follow a similar process.
Applicants can be declined at any stage in the application process. The most suitable candidates in the application pool are selected amongst those who pass every stage.
Once you have been selected, you advance to recruit training. In the Toronto Police Service application process, you are sent to the Ontario Police College for recruit training. Recruits need to pass this program in order to become a police officer.

How To Prepare For The Police Academy
The course syllabus is extensive. To get through it successfully, candidates must be prepared. Here are some ways you can navigate through the course with success.
First keep fit. Yes, you may have succeeded in the police officer exam, but your physical strength and endurance are now going to be tested much further. Go to the gym, build strength and cardiovascular capacity to maximize your endurance on the field. You should do strength-based exercises at least three-times weekly, and cardiovascular exercises daily. However, you may tweak this recommendation based on your own activity / inactivity levels.
Second, build teamwork skills. No police officer goes it alone. To succeed at both the police academy and in your future career as a police officer, you must be able to build and maintain personal relationships and this includes working effectively within teams. Sometimes this can be difficult, particularly if its not something you like or are used to. But it is something that you need to work on and its better to start now rather than trying to resolve it when things are too late.
