How Do I Find Out More About Text

Sending a Text to 911

As always, try to remain calm and aware in your surroundings, and make safety your top priority.

Obtaining A Wiretap Order

Can police listen to phone conversations on your landline or cell? Yes, they can potentially listen in on both under certain conditions.

Wiretaps can provide supportive evidence against people suspected of criminal activity. Since its a severe invasion of privacy, though, it comes with strict procedures for law enforcement. Before they can eavesdrop on your conversations, the cops have to obtain something similar to a warrant called a wiretap order.

Since wiretapping is extremely intrusive, a wiretap order is a bit more complicated to obtain than a warrant. The law enforcement officials have to prove probable cause to believe that listening to your conversations will help them with a serious crime. This can include terrorism, money laundering, or drug trafficking.

Police may also seek a warrant to obtain location information through cellphone data.

What Happens When You Text A Tip To Nj Police

SALEM Theres drug activity. A neighbor is committing insurance fraud. Theres fear someone has been abused.

Do the right thing and report it to police via text message, or think twice?

Will the police track the text and turn up demanding more information?

Will the identity or phone number of the person providing the tip get out and criminals will track them down?

The answer to all is no, authorities said.

With the new tip411 system introduced by the Salem County Prosecutors Office on Thursday, not even a subpoena can help.

Throughout New Jersey, police use different systems to ask for the public s help in solving crimes, but many who have valuable information are still wary.

We believe the public is our greatest law enforcement resource, said Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan Thursday. Tip411 allows a safe and secure way for community members to share important information with police without fear or retribution. By providing this service to each department, citizens can communicate with their own department to collectively solve crimes in their communities.

How sure can someone be that they will remain anonymous?

Chief of County Detectives Brian Facemyer said that when a text is sent via tip411, all identifying information is removed before the information is forwarded to individual police departments.

Subpoenas have even been issued in an attempt to find information on tipsters, but to no avail.

    Can I Text 999

âIs it cool having a police officer brother?â? Can you shut down a girls ...

Yes, you can send a text to 999 in an emergency. But why would you want to?

    • In a remote environment in the mountains for example you may not be able to make a phone call but you may be able to send a text as they need less bandwidth to be sent. The problem with calls is that you need to ensure youll have proper reception during the length of the call. Sometimes signal quality is simply not good enough to allocate the necessary bandwidth for a voice call, but you can still send/receive texts because the bandwidth you need for that is really narrow.
    • The emergency SMS service lets deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired people in the UK send an SMS text message to the UK 999 service where it will be passed to the police, ambulance, fire rescue, or coastguard.

So in an emergency situation being able to text 999 rather than phone them can save lives, potentially your own.

You will need to register your mobile phone before using the emergency SMS service. Following registration, by simply sending an SMS message to 999 you can call for help and the emergency services will be able to reply to you.

Take 5 Steps For Better Online Security

Its important to strengthen your online security to help avoid all types of online scams. Take action to improve your digital posture by following these steps:

  • Implement Multi Factor Authentication : Passwords are generally easy for scammers to crack, and even if you use strong passphrases, theres still the possibility that a cybercriminal can obtain your passphrase in a data breach. Implementing MFA is a great way to maximize your security and ensure that you are the only one who can gain access to your accounts. MFA should be implemented on all accounts where it is available. Check your accounts security settings to see if it is something you can set up.
  • Update Your Privacy Settings: Privacy settings allow you to control your personal information and how that information is used. Review your privacy settings on all of your accounts including your social media accounts. Consider restricting who can see your friends list, contacts, photos and posts.
  • Activate Automatic Updates: Automatic updates are a set of changes to an app, software or operating system that are automatically pushed by the developer to fix or improve it. Oftentimes, cybercriminals take advantage of security flaws to plant malicious software on your devices. By activating automatic updates, you will automatically patch security vulnerabilities to protect your data.
  • Are Texts To 911 Quicker Than A Call

No. Voice calls are still the preferred method for contacting 911.

While South Sound 911 processes text messages in the same manner as voice calls to 911, texts are not as efficient as voice calls. Call takers cannot hear background noise to better ascertain the situation, and there are inherent delays when sending or receiving text replies.

The Governments Ability To Review Your Phone Data

If probable cause exists to investigate criminal activity, state or federal law enforcement officials would be able to obtain a search warrant, or wiretap authorization, from a judge. Such a warrant would give law enforcement the ability to collect certain records from your phone or service provider, depending on its terms. This information would not be released publicly during the course of the investigation but could eventually become public if a prosecutor decides to bring charges and introduce your records into evidence.

In the United States, the Fourth Amendment protects from unreasonable search and seizure of property by the government, which includes cellphone data. However, very little information is out of the governments reach when probable cause of criminal activity exists.

And if youre entering the U.S. from another country, your Fourth Amendment rights are reduced. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have been requesting access to travelers cellphones, a practice that might require court action to define clear limitations.

    Common Mistakes In Harassment Reports

    Testing text to 911

A review of your case will start off with a look at the evidence you provided. Keep in mind: the detective you are dealing with could be unfamiliar with technology. Unfortunately, there are no current requirements for law enforcement to be computer savvy or have a thorough understanding of Smartphones, IP addresses, Facebook and so on, despite the ever-increasing amount of harassment and stalking occurring using these devices.

Lets say you have a somewhat up-to-date detective who has the time to invest into trying to figure things out: He or she is going to glance everything over to ensure it makes sense. If you are leaving out valuable details or if things just dont add up, the detective is going to take your case less seriously. Here are examples of what can lead to this situation:

  • If someone is harassing you and you continually responded, then you have fueled the fire. If you responded with anything other than Cease Harassing Me, then you are being a catalyst to the drama. If you do not want to be harassed, then do not respond to the texts. Yes, it hurts badly to have your children called names, but if you text back to defend your children, you are not demanding that the harassment cease. Instead, you are making another attack more likely by showing interest and no fear of the individual harassing you.
  • Additionally, if your evidence is not complied properly, the detective is going to have a near-impossible time trying to navigate it.
