However, drivers of government vehicles can also be the negligent drivers causing the crashes. For victims, the fact that the vehicle is owned by a governmental agency adds an extra layer of problems when seeking the compensation that they are entitled to.

Do Uk Police Cars Have To Be Taxed

No, police cars do not need to be taxed in the UK because they are emergency vehicles which means they are exempt.

Here is a full list of the vehicles that are exempt from vehicle tax, according to Suffolk Constabulary:

  • Emergency vehicles which include police, fire, ambulances
  • Lifeboat haulage vehicles
  • Vehicles imported by foreign armed forces etc
  • Crown, Diplomatic or Consular vehicles
  • historic vehicles which were constructed 40 or more years ago.

Police cars are exempt from vehicle tax as they are classed as emergency vehicles.

The list shows that a number of other vehicles are also exempt from the tax including council-owned vehicles, tractors, and historic vehicles.

This is why police cars would never display tax discs back when they were a legal requirement for other vehicles on the road.

How Do Police Know If A Car Is Insured

All states require drivers to have some type of insurance. If a police officer catches you driving without insurance, then you could face penalties. But how do police know if a car is insured?

Police use various strategies to check the insurance status of a vehicle. Some police officers simply check paperwork. Other police officers check your insurance immediately after pulling you over. Some check your insurance against a public database, while others dont check insurance at all.

Today, were explaining how the police know if a car is insured.

So You Just Hit A Police Car

First, check yourself for injuries. If you are in any pain, do not get out of your car or move. Second, call 911. You just hit a cop, but legally they cant conduct an investigation on a collision in which they were involved. By this time, the police officer will probably be out of their car to check if youre ok.

From here, the investigation will be conducted as if you had hit any other car, with one major difference. Government vehicles are typically insured by the government, making the claim-filing process more complicated. For this reason, its best to call your insurance agency. Alert them that you hit a police car and let them handle the claims process with the police department.

Who Can I Sue If Im Hit My By A Police Car

Indiana uses the fault system for auto insurance in normal cases, but police cars are often covered by government entities. If you get hit by a police car, there is unfortunately not an automatic hit by police car insurance that covers damages.

It is the Indiana government that insures police cars. Making an insurance claim or filing a lawsuit against any government entity, which includes police officers, can be difficult. Under the Indiana Tort Claims Act, police officers can be protected from lawsuits. However, if it is found that the officer was acting outside the scope of their job duties, they may be found liable for their actions.

Law Enforcement Discounts On Insurance

Can police tell if your insurance is valid & how to find out someones ...

Some companies offer special discounts for law enforcement officers. Some of these companies include:

  • Geico: Geico offers a federal employee discount that you may qualify for as a police officer.
  • Liberty Mutual: If you are a member of the Fraternal Order of Police , you may be eligible for special savings with Liberty Mutual.
  • Country Financial: Full-time police officers may be eligible for Country Financials occupation discount.
  • Farmers: In some states, Farmers offers an occupation discount. Speak with a local agent to see if it is available in your area.
  • California Casualty: Available in most states, California Casualty sells insurance only to firefighters, police, educators and a few other professions.

In general, getting auto insurance quotes from several providers is a good way to compare coverage, discounts and prices. This way, you may be able to find the coverage you need at a cheaper price. And while some companies list discounts online, not all savings opportunities may be advertised. Talking to a representative from each company might be the best way to find companies that offer law enforcement discounts on insurance.

Why Carry Proof Of Auto Insurance If Police Can Scan Your License Plate

Although police can determine your car insurance status by scanning your license plate, youre still legally required to carry your insurance information to show proof when asked. In fact, many states impose penalties for driving without proof of insurance.

This is because technology may not always be available to confirm your insurance information. If the software is down, or if youre stopped in a part of the country that hasnt adopted electronic scanning, a paper copy of your car insurance serves as a backup.

Its also legal to carry digital proof of your car insurance by taking a photo of your insurance card. But again, carrying a paper copy is always a smart idea in case your phone is lost, stolen, or dead. Claiming Its on my phone, but the battery ran out, might sound too much like a dog ate my homework, when a cop asks for proof of insurance.

An officer may also request physical proof of insurance to verify that youre providing accurate information to them. Remember, complying with the law about car insurance includes:

  • Being truthful about it

Was The Officer Responding To An Emergency

In order to be exempt from certain traffic laws, the officer has to be responding to an emergency. An emergency includes an officer who is:

  • Responding to an emergency call
  • Involved in a rescue operation
  • In the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected law violator
  • Responding to a fire alarm or
  • Operating a fire department vehicle while traveling from one place to another because of an emergency call.10

A police officer doesnt get to claim that he doesnt have to follow the laws just because he or she is a cop. It is not considered an emergency if the officer is driving back from a call or is driving his or her personal car when there is no emergency.

Example:Officer Friday was about to return to the station at the end of his shift when he got a call. Officer Friday responded to an emergency call in Pico Rivera and responded at a high speed with lights and sirens. After arriving on the scene, Officer Friday was told it was a false alarm and to return to the station.

If The Car Accident Is Minor Do I Need A Police Report For Insurance

Can the Police tell if I have car insurance?

With most minor car accidents, no police report is needed for insurance. Minor dust-ups may not warrant having a police officer respond to the scene. In that case, it’s up to you to chronicle the details of the incident. If nobody gets hurt in the car accident, the damage is minor, those involved have a valid license and insurance, and all parties are cooperative, police presence may not be necessary.

What Else To Do With A License Plate Number

If you have a license plate number, then you can look up someones information at the DMV, create a police report, or notify your insurer.

Some states dont allow you to look up a drivers identity and address using a license plate number. In this case, you may need to let the police or your insurance company identify the other driver for you.

You may also need to inform your insurance company of the other drivers license plate number. If you are making an insurance claim for a hit-and-run, then your insurance company may need all the information you have about the other vehicle, including the license plate number. Alternatively, most insurers simply require a police report, which includes all of this information.

Police Officers In Michigan Can See If You Have Car Insurance Before You Show Proof Of It

Police in Michigan are using an easy way to check whether a motor vehicle is properly insured.

Michigan State Police and other agencies can tell whether most vehicles are insured by running a license plate number through an in-car computer.

Were kind of excited about it, given its ability to help us target fraudulent insurance or people, frankly, who are driving around with no insurance, which is dangerous for everybody, said Sargent Amy Dehner, a legislative liaison with the Michigan State Police.

State law still requires drivers carry proof of insurance.

Insurance companies have to send information to the secretary of states office twice a month already. While that practice had been in place for some time, officials say the information wasnt previously immediately available through the Law Enforcement Information Network, or LEIN. Now, that information is available to cops when they run your plate.

Michigan State Police officers dont treat it as a primary reason for a stop but its a really good reason to take a close look at what youre being handed at the window, Dehner said.

Dehner says theyve been able to crack down on people using fake insurance cards or who were conned into buying a policy from a fake insurer.

Things that could be made on a home computer, things that people were buying on Craigslist, fake insurance storefronts, Dehner said. She says this change was made after officials from the Secretary of States office recommended it.

It Depends On Your State

Different states have different insurance systems. In some states, law enforcement officers can simply check your license plates or drivers license to verify your car insurance.

In other states, law enforcement has special equipment in their vehicles to verify an insurance policy.

DMV policies vary between states. In some states, the DMV immediately notifies the police when a car insurance policy is canceled. In other states, insurance policies may or may not alert the DMV about policy non-renewal.

33 states, for example, have a database of uninsured drivers. In these states, insurers track data about which drivers are uninsured and which drivers are actively insured.

However, even in states that have a database of uninsured drivers, most insurers do not give police instant access to this database. Police cannot instantly check this database after pulling over a vehicle, for example. Instead, police officers must call the 1-800 number on a drivers insurance card to verify.

In other states, the process is more high-tech. Approximately ten states use automatic license plate recognition cameras to detect uninsured drivers. In these states, police run your plates automatically after you are pulled over, and the system checks whether or not you are insured. This allows the police officer to check and verify insurance more easily. Instead of manually checking each driver, the police officer can check hundreds of drivers in one shift.

What Happens If A Police Car Hits You

Police seized all of these cars in just two weeks

This is where things get a little trickier. Like we mentioned earlier, government vehicles dont have automotive insurance like civilian vehicles. That means filing a claim against them is going to be complicated. Everything with the government is complicated.

So, our best advice is to hire a lawyer. Theyll know what to do, and theyll protect you through this arduous process. It might cost you a little more in the long run, but its better than having to shoulder the entire cost of repairing your vehicle, or worse. We recognize that most police officers serve honestly, but we know that not all do. So, protect yourself with a lawyer

The LEIN system helps police quickly identify the following:

  • If a driver is operating a vehicle without insurance
  • If a drivers no-fault car insurance policy has expired
  • If a driver is carrying an up-to-date insurance card
