How Long Does A Police Background Investigation Take
The process of background investigation is quite sophisticated and includes checking several facts and places in order to get full account of your past activities. Depending on whether you have resided in several places or worked for several employers prior to applying for a law enforcement job, it may take anything for couple of weeks to several months.
If you are applying for a position in any of the federal law enforcement agencies, such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the complete pre-employment investigative screening, which includes collection and review of fingerprints and the Questionnaire for National Security Positions, the polygraph exam, and the background investigation, can take 12 months and even more. This is due to the fact that for most of the positions the candidate needs security clearance that they are eligible for access to classified information.
All in all, the background investigation is a lengthy process and you need to be patient and remain at the agency disposal until it is completed.

However, based on other provisions in the Criminal Records Act, a local police service may request fingerprints in order to check if adoptive parents have record suspensions for sex offences. The RCMP strongly recommends that a check of local police records accompany any adoption request completed by Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services .

Why Background Checks Happen
Specific reasons for conducting background checks vary depending on who needs to run the check.
Employers typically use background checks in hopes of avoiding financial loss through fraud or theft, to protect company reputation, and to avoid running afoul of laws banning undocumented immigrants and others ineligible for employment. In addition, employers in some regulated industries are forbidden from placing persons with certain criminal convictions in certain jobs.
Landlords and property managers also run background checks, typically because they want to avoid tenants who dont pay their rent. To minimize this risk, they may screen for dodgy credit histories. Many landlords may also run checks to avoid renting to people on sex-crime registries or with histories of domestic abuse or other violent crimes.
There are several benefits to running a self background check. It can help you:
- Anticipate and address questions that could arise in the course of an employment or housing screening.
- Uncover errors and inaccuracies in financial and legal records compiled about you, and gives you a chance to correct them.
- Save time and money when compared to retrieving all your personal records individually.
- Equip you with a report you can share that documents your history and any supplemental information you care to provide.
Companies That Perform Name
Private companies that perform name-based checks do not have access to police databases. They enter into agreements with municipal police services to conduct name-based criminal record checks of the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre system. This normally includes a check of the National Repository of Criminal Records based on the applicant’s name and date of birth and may include checks of other national databanks.
Some companies may request name-based checks of other national databanks. Note, however, that not all police services contribute to these databanks, and those that do may not share all of their information.

Verifying Funds On A Check
Theres a difference between verifying a check for funds and confirming its legitimacy, and not everyone realizes this.
For example, if a stolen check was written on an active bank account using a forged signature, theres a good chance the funds will be available, and the check will clear. But the check is not legit because it was stolen and not authorized by the account holder.
Even if the check clears, it isnt legit, and the bank will eventually return it once the fraud is exposed.
Lets take a closer look at the process of verifying funds on a check.
