If you receive and accept a job offer, the police department sends you to a police academy near you to complete a classroom curriculum and practical training. There are many police academies, also called Basic Peace Officer training courses, throughout Texas that TCOLE endorses throughout the state, and they typically take a few months to complete. During the program, you may learn about and practice many concepts relevant to your new role, such as:

S To Become A Police Officer In San Antonio

After all the qualifying requirements are met, applicants may then move on to the actual hiring process. To become a police officer in San Antonio, nine steps need to be cleared:

  • Submit the Application
  • Candidates will be required to complete an online application, and submit it along with a list of required documents. You will then be given a date for the subsequent Physical Ability Tests, Computer Examination and Structured Oral Interview.

  • Pass the Physical Ability Test
  • This test is divided into two parts Part I involves an obstacle course run, with timed components such as vehicle exit, vehicle load, culvert crawl, obstacle jump and duck, obstacle weave, dummy drag and so on. The entire Part I need to be completed within 4 minutes. Part II of the test is the untimed component and involves a handgun simulation. Applicants will be required to dry fire with a training gun, keeping their arms steady, within a 7-inch diameter ring.

  • Pass the Computer Exam
  • The test, called SAELLEE measures the candidates cognitive ability and behavior orientation, through a total of 350 multiple choice questions. It is administered online.

  • Pass the Structured Oral Interview
  • This interview is video-taped and involves questions about various abilities of the candidate. This includes conflict resolution, honesty, community relations, judgment ability, oral communication, planning and organization skills, problem solving skills, logic and reasoning skills, team building and teamwork orientation.

    How To Become A Houston Texas Police Officer

    The Houston Police Department has adopted a rigorous hiring process to ensure that only the best-qualified applicants become sworn officers. In addition to the minimum requirements outlined below, candidates for employment with the HPD must have either 48 semester hours of college credit from an accredited college with a minimum GPA of 2.0 at least 18 months of active duty service with the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge or at least five years of full-time employment as a peace officer with a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement licensed entity in another jurisdiction.

    Those who meet the requirements will be scheduled for a reading comprehension test and an initial interview with a recruiting investigator. Next, the Houston Police Department requires applicants to pass a fitness exam, which consists of a 1.5-mile run, a 300-meter sprint, a vertical jump, push-ups, an agility run, and a weapons trigger pull test. Candidates who pass the first steps will then complete a background check, medical and psychological screening, and a second personal interview. Candidates who successfully pass all stages may be offered conditional employment and invited to complete officer recruit training at the police academy.

Though the program is Monday through Friday, cadets are prohibited from working or attending non-academy classes during the six-month training schedule. After graduation, recruits complete a six-month probation period, the first 12 to 16 weeks of which are completed while partnered with a Field Training Officer.

    Pass A Polygraph Exam
