Canadian police agencies generally follow the same process which involves a series of tests, checks and interviews, including:
- A written exam
- A polygraph exam
- A background investigation
Some of these tests require detailed paperwork but minimal preparation. For some tests, like the physical tests, you would be best prepared if you did a fitness training program, prior to, depending on your fitness level. Other tests, like the polygraph exam, require no preparation at all.
Applicants can be declined at any point in the stages listed above and even if a candidate passes every stage, an offer of employment is not guaranteed.
Once you have completed all assessments, your entire application package is reviewed and measured against other applicants to determine the most suitable candidates for the role as a police officer.
If you are recruited, you can expect a conditional offer of employment that allows you to advance to the final step before you become a police officer: cadet training.

Background Of The Issue
Most police departments have traditionally placed their patrol officers on a 40-hour workweek in which personnel work five consecutive 8-hour shifts, followed by two days off. In recent years, however, an increasing number of law enforcement agencies have moved to some variant of a compressed workweek. Some officers work four 10-hour shifts weekly or three 12-hour shifts . While this trend has been moving apace, few, if any, rigorous scientific studies examining the advantages and disadvantages of these works schedules for officers and their agencies have been completed until now.
The researchers used the most rigorous scientific techniques available: a randomized controlled experiment. The NIJ-funded study was conducted by the Police Foundation.

Impact On Social Life
Lets briefly touch on your general social life. Keeping up with family and friends may become slightly difficult as you work strange and long hours.
You will typically be exhausted after working a twelve hour shift and when you get home, you may find yourself just needing to chill without the social interaction.
However, make sure you communicate your situation with those closest to you so that they understand what you are going through. Youll be surprised how understanding theyll become and accommodating to scheduling catchups around when you can meet.
Be prepared to miss out on birthdays, St. Patricks Day, Cinco de Mayo or days filled with activities. But get on the front foot and asked your closest to celebrate with you on a time that works for everyone. A party isnt a party without the people you want to have there!

What Is The Workplace Of A Police Officer Like
Police officers rarely work a regular, 40-hour week. Officers work late at night, on the weekends, and even on holidays. Most police officers work outdoors while on patrol, and are subjected to all types of weather conditions. Police work is also mentally gruelling. Officers often witness terrible crimes or become the focus of a criminal’s rage and abuse. Police officers must handle the stress brought on by these situations while remaining calm and collected.
Working as a police officer can bring on a range of emotions. It can leave you feeling satisfied, sad, rewarded, disgruntled, lonely and fulfilled, all within the same shift. A police officer needs to be a warrior, an information booth, a social worker, a guardian angel, a marriage counselor, and an arbitrator . The mental challenges are far more rigorous than all of the physical challenges put together.
Police officers carry the power of life and death on their hips, and are empowered to do things that, were they done by civilians, would get those civilians arrested. They can control traffic, take and imprison people against their will, and seize property. However, they are constantly reminded of the constraints that they must work under in order to exercise that power lawfully and fairly.

Notifying The Next Of Kin
The task falls to you to inform the deceased’s next of kin now that you’ve been relieved of investigative responsibilities. In this case, it’s a wife who stays home to care for the couple’s two small children. You show up at her door and ring the doorbell.
She answers the door and stares at you as you stand there with your hat in your hand. She knows why you’re there, and you know she knows. There’s no easy way to tell her, so you rip the band-aid off. “Ma’am, I’m very sorry to tell you that your husband has been killed in a car crash.”
Naturally, she cries, while you do your best not to. You offer to make phone calls for her and to stay with her until a family member, minister, or a friend can arrive.

Real Police Work: Report Writing
You find a vacant parking lot to catch up on reports after you leave the gas station. You park someplace where people can see you if they need help, and it doesn’t take long before someone does. You get out of your car as the man approaches so he can’t surprise you while you’re sitting down. You’re always thinking tactically.
As it turns out, he just needs directions, and you’re more than happy to provide them.
Another car pulls up just as you get back to your report writing. You leave your car again and meet an elderly woman who’s frightened because she found her door open when she got home. She remembers shutting it and locking it. She asks you to come to her house to make sure it’s safe for her to go inside.

How Does Police Academy Training Work
No matter which program you choose, before beginning work at a police department, you will have to enter a police academy for formal training. This training will consist of various elements that prepare you for life as a police officer, including training it the classroom, field training that walks you through the rigors of the day-to-day work, and in-service training that allows you to begin working with the public on a probationary basis. Heres more about police academy training:
The classroom curriculum will focus on a variety of subjects, ranging from the law itself to administrative and department procedures. Cadets will also learn not just what the law is, but how to apply it in the real world. For example, a police officer may know that probable cause is required for a warrant to conduct a search, but what about the exceptions where a warrant isnt needed? Or what should the officer do or say if an individual contests the validity of the warrant? Much of this classroom training will be necessary before field training can take place or to put the hands-on skills into context.
Lateral Moves: Specialty Positions
Policies vary from department to department, but a year or two after you’ve completed your probationary year, you might be eligible to make a lateral move into a specialty post, such as a K-9 unit, a detective or investigator, a training officer, a member of SWAT, or many other specialized positions.
If you’re really serious about taking your career as far as you can go, it’s a good idea to get exposure to the many different units in your department.
