Baltimore Officer On Life Support After Ambush Shooting, Police Recover Vehicle Of Interest

In Maryland, the special police are used as security officers, but are a step above your typical mall cop. Special police are able to arrest someone for a crime that they witness as long as it is on the property that they are guarding. If they attend police academy training, special police are also able to enforce traffic violations. Otherwise, special training is not required.

Contact the Maryland State Police or go to their website to obtain an application for a special police license.

Contact a state police location regarding having fingerprints taken. They are required to be sent in with the application. It is also possible to have them taken on the local level with a police or sheriffs department or with the Criminal Justice Department for the state.

Obtain two passport photos. You can typically have these taken at a photo shop.

Submit the application back to the Maryland State Police, having filled out the information about a special police license and any other licenses you are interested in. The form covers several. Have pages 7 and 13 notarized. Submit two passport-style photos and the fingerprint cards with the application. Also send in the $137.95 fee. Renewal applications require a $79.95 fee.

S To Become A Sheriff In Maryland

Once you have satisfied the requirements listed above, you may begin the process to become a sheriff in Maryland.

Since the position of a sheriff is a law enforcement position, you would be required to have some relevant knowledge and experience. For this, you ought to enroll in a police academy first. A police academy would give you knowledge about the use of firearms, crowd management, witness questioning, arresting procedures and so on. This knowledge would later come in handy, when you lead an entire law enforcement department.

The position of a sheriff is the equivalent of a police chief in a precinct. Therefore, you will be required to have the right education, training and experience. Once you graduate from a police academy, you will have to work as an officer for a few years. The number of years of experience needed by each county could vary.

A bachelors degree in criminal justice or a related major might be a plus factor for your entire election campaign. Even though this is not mandatory, having a higher education degree would not only give you more knowledge about the law enforcement field, but would also make you a stronger candidate as compared to those who have a high school diploma only.

If you are successful in the elections, you would finally be elected as the sheriff for your county. After taking an oath of loyalty and signing a contract, you may begin your four-year long term .

Baltimore Police Look To Be Among First Law Enforcement Agencies To Hire Civilian Investigators

BALTIMORE The Baltimore Police Department plans to become one of the first law enforcement agencies in the nation to hire civilians to investigate low-level crimes, internal affairs complaints and cold cases.

Baltimore will set a standard for staffing allocations in law enforcement agencies across the country, which have struggled with hiring and retention, Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news conference Thursday at police headquarters.

This will free up our sworn detectives to better meet the needs of our residents by being out on our streets, deterring and solving crimes, Scott said.

He and Police Commissioner Michael Harrison provided new details on plans to hire 35 civilian investigators this year, which is included in the mayors proposed $4 billion city budget for the coming fiscal year. The mayors spending plan calls for $560.4 million for the police department, which would include funding for the new roles and would eliminate 30 vacant sworn officer positions.

The plan must still be approved by the City Council and Board of Estimates.

Other agencies have expressed interest in hiring more civilians to address shortages, but few others have focused on civilian investigators, Baltimore officials say. In Arizona, Phoenix police say hundreds have applied for a few dozen civilian jobs, according to reports.

Unlike sworn police officers, civilian officers would not carry guns, have arrest powers or require the same level of academy training.
