New York City Police Officer Requirements
Candidates looking to become NYC police officers must fulfill a number of requirements in order to be eligible for employment. Applicants must:
- Be a US citizen and at least 21 years of age on or before the day of hire
- Be a legal resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City or the surrounding counties
- Possess a valid unrestricted New York State drivers license
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Have completed at least 60 college credits with a 2.0 GPA from an accredited college or university OR 2 years of full-time active military service in the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge
- Have no prior felonies, or any repeated convictions including petit larceny, any domestic violence charges, or any crime that may represent a disposition towards violence and disorder
- Have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 and corrected vision of 20/20
- Not be colorblind colorblindness is an immediate disqualifier

New York Regulations Allow Cops Stripped Of Training Credentials To Be Rehired
Police officers who were decertified by state regulators went on to find work at other departments and public safety agencies, records show.

Dominic Caprario lay handcuffed on the asphalt as the punches came down. The first officer hit him repeatedly in the back of the head, Caprario recalled, leading him to shield his face against the rubber tire of the squad car. A second officer walked over and stomped Caprarios face with the heel of a steel-toed Timberland boot.
According to interviews with Caprario, along with medical records and documents from a subsequent civil rights lawsuit, the 2011 incident began when two Staten Island police officers pulled Caprario from his double-parked car and accused him of buying drugs. It was Officer Anthony J. Egan who initiated the violence, Caprario recalled, attempting to shut the trunk on Caprarios fingers, throwing him against the hood of his car, and punching the 24-year-old as he lay restrained. Egan went nuts, Caprario said.
Egan denied the allegations in court and did not respond to requests for comment.
Across a 10-year career at the New York Police Department, Egan cost New York City over $437,000 in seven separate civil rights lawsuits, including the one filed by Caprario, accusing the officer of excessive force, false arrests, and false testimony.

Environmental Conservation Police Officers are sworn police officers involved in the enforcement of the Environmental Conservation Law in order to protect the States natural resources and environment. They investigate complaints in order to detect and document both state and federal Environmental Conservation Law felonies, misdemeanors and violations. Environmental Conservation Police Officers meet with school groups, service groups, regulated community and hunters and anglers clubs to promote compliance with environmental conservation law, which includes fish and wildlife law. New York City Police Officer Training Prerequisites And Education Requirements
To be eligible to sit for the written civil service exam, applicants must be between the ages of 17.5 and 35. To be hired as an officer with the NYPD, candidates must be US citizens and at least 21 years of age, hold a high school diploma plus at least 60 college credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA, have a valid New York drivers license, and reside within the five boroughs of New York City or surrounding counties. The college experience requirement may be waived with two years of full-time service with the US Armed Forces.
Once hired as a police recruit, prospective officers attend the New York City Police Academy. The rigorous training program lasts six months. Courses cover such topics as law, behavioral science, physical training and tactics, police science, firearms training, and First Aid/ CPR. Classes in terrorism, identity theft, and other advanced law enforcement skills are also part of the curriculum. Recruits must pass 4 separate exams with a score of 75% or higher to graduate from the academy and be sworn in as NYPD officers.
Suffolk County Civil Service Exam And Suffolk County Police
The Suffolk County Civil Service is the governing authority for job-related entrance exams and promotional exams in Suffolk County. The Shelter Island Town Police and the other town, village and Suffolk County Police Agencies recruit from this test.
In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages, water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

A Statewide Police Force Inspired By Two Women
Two women are credited with starting the movement that led to the creation of the New York State Police. Moyca Newell and Katherine Mayo, along with the foreman’s employer advocated for the establishment of a state police force to provide protection to New York’s rural areas following the murder of a construction foreman during a robbery in Westchester in 1913. The man’s murderers walked free because there wasn’t a local police department at the time.
Subsequently, the New York State legislature passed a new law establishing the Division of State Police on April 11, 1917.
The first four women troopers graduated from the State Police’s academy in 1974.
