Demand For Diverse Santas Increases

ATLANTA – Nothing says Christmas like the image of Santa Claus.

While many things change with time, the traditional face of the jolly old elf has remained unchanged for decades.

However, those in the Santa business say the demand for wider representation is growing.

Santa is one of the of the most joyful and instantly recognizable characters across the world.

At malls across the country, some kids have noticed a diverse set of Santas popping up.

Children are always asking me, how can you be a Santa of this color and then be a Santa of another color somewhere else, and I always tell them Santa travels all over the world, so Santa relates to all communities and cultures, the mall Santa said.

Yes, it is important for us to see ones that look like us so that is why it was important to get those pictures, said Shameka Parker, an Atlanta mother.

Now we got diverse Santas and everything. We have Mexican Santa, Chinese Santa, whatever kind of Santa you want that makes you feel good about Christmas, said Joseph Thomas, an Atlanta father.

One of the nations largest Santa hiring services said the demand to hire diverse Santas is on the rise across the country.

The demand for diverse Santas has gone through the roof. We cant keep up. We are able to let Santa look and sound like the people he is speaking to, said Mitch Allen, owner and head elf at Hire Santa.

Representation means so much to so many people, said Stafford Braxton, owner of Santas Just Like Me.

Teen Arrested For Assaulting Officer At Event That Was Shut Down At Urban Air Hcso Says

UPDATE :

A teenager was arrested for assaulting an officer at Urban Air Adventure Park, which was shut down Wednesday during an event to prevent youth violence due to overcrowding, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says.

During the event, HCSO says the event coordinator, Christopher Newby, talked to a deputy at the facility who was working an extra job and asked for assistance in shutting down the event.

He asked for more assistance with stopping any additional people from entering the venue due to the large the crowd already in the building, HCSO says.

HCSO says concerns were quickly growing after a very large crowd outside the venue was becoming disorderly, both verbally and physically. Nearby businesses were also impacted by the crowds.

The HCSO deputy allowed the event coordinator to use the PA system on his patrol unit to address the crowd and ask for those not already in the venue to leave. While attempting to disperse the crowd, HCSO says people were not listening to directives.

Two teens, ages 14 and 16, were advised several times by the deputy to leave and HCSO says his commands were ignored.

HCSO says one of the teens was then detained by the deputy.

While walking the teen to the patrol unit, HCSO says the other teen followed the deputy, aggressively shouting profanities.

As the teen was placed in the vehicle, HCSO says the deputy turned around to find a Chattanooga police officer engaged in a struggle with the other teen in question.

Almost Anyone Can Hire A Cop In Full Uniform With A Gun But It Comes With Lots Of Gray Areas

Its a typical day in downtown Salt Lake City for Chief Deputy Fred Ross. Hes patrolling one of the most dangerous parts of the city. Its a neighborhood in transition as new construction and businesses clash with the homeless population.

As a result, many local businesses hire off-duty police officers, complete with squad car, gun and uniform.

Most of them realize theres only so many police officers in the city, said Ross. If they want a constant presence, then theyre having to take that on themselves whether its an off-duty officer or security. More often than not, they tend to hire police.

For $30 an hour, a business in Salt Lake City can hire an officer in uniform. Local business owner Kasandra Verbrugghen has an officer stand guard several days a week. Id love to see the city step up and pay for what were having to pay, but you know, that hasnt happened, she said.

Around the country, businesses and private citizens can hire an off-duty cop for an hourly rate, with uniform, squad car and gun. Police departments say its a good way to get more cops on the street without dipping into other parts of city budgets or raising taxes. But critics say it leaves room for a lot of room for error.

Private security firms in the area take issue with this. They say theyre competing with a government entity.

I am looking at a venue that requires we hire 1 off duty cop for the whole evening at our expense, since we will be serving alcohol. Its a lodge at a beautiful county park. My FH is concerned that his presence, patrolling the wedding, is going to make guests feel uncomfortable. Mind you, were not a rowdy group, but we will be serving alcohol and having a good old time lol. Has anyone ever found the officer at their wedding to be intrusive or overbearing? I told my FH that he will likely just hang out outside and just make sure no one super inebriated gets in a car and drives home. Anyone? I really love this venue, but that is his one hang up with it.
