If you were accused of a crime and your case is pending , then you are entitled to a copy of the police report. You can obtain a copy of the police report by requesting one from the District Attorneys office who is handling the case. You or your attorney can make this request, and generally the District Attorney has a maximum time line for compliance in other words, they must give you a copy within a set number of days.

If the outcome of the case has already been decided- the case was dismissed or you were found guilty or innocent- then you can request a copy of the police report from the court. The court may charge you a copy fee for this service.

After the request is received by the Santa Monica Police Department, a representative from the Records Unit will contact you with the fee required for your request.

How Do I Obtain A Copy Of A Police Report Or Other Record

Requests for copies of police reports, accident reports, or other police records are made directly to the Police Department by filling out a Public Open Records Request form and submitting it to the Police Department. The form is available online or can be completed in-person at the Police Department.

Once received, the form is reviewed by a Police Department Lieutenant who is specifically trained in Wisconsin Open Records Law. We will notify you if the record can be released, and when it will be available. There is a nominal fee for copies of documents.

How To Get A Copy Of A Police Report

As we touched on above, a police report is generated by the investigating officer who responds to a request for assistance at the scene of a car accident. The police report is a summary of information regarding the crashusually containing facts related to the accident and opinions of the investigating officer.

There are two ways to obtain a police report. One way will cost you money, the other probably will not. To obtain a paid copy of the police report, you need to request a copy from the local law enforcement office that drafted the report. Before leaving the scene of the crash, the investigating officer typically will hand you a receipt with the identification number for the police report. Call the traffic division of the local law enforcement agency that responded to the scene of the car accident, pay the administrative fee , and you should have no problem obtaining a copy.

If you do not have or do not know the identification number for the police report, you can provide the date, time, and location of the car accident, along with your name, to assist in locating the report.

To obtain a free copy of the police report, you can ask the insurance adjuster who is handling your claim if they requested the report, and ask for a copy.

Regardless of how you obtain the police report, it may take a few weeks for the investigating officer to complete the report, and for it to become available.

Police Traffic Accident Report

These are reports completed by CSPD officers that detail the events of a traffic accident. Please note, if you filed your traffic accident report online or mailed your form to the State of Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles, the CSPD will not have a copy of your report. California Family Code § 6228 provides that victims of the alleged crimes, listed above, may receive a copy of their incident report within five days of their request, free of charge. Due to the sensitive information included in the reports, SFPD protocol requires in-person identification verification. Victims or their designated representatives must either submit their request in-person or pick-up their incident report in person at CISU Records Management. If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision in Surrey and require an accident report, you can request a copy of the accident report by calling the Surrey RCMP Disclosure Unit at 604-599-7730. You will be asked to provide certain information including: a file number, date and location of the incident. Note: accident reports from other cities should be directed to the police force of jurisdiction.
