Is There Any Way To Skip Patrol And Go Directly Into A Specialty Unit

Police Jobs: Can I become a Police Officer at age 40?

No. Both entry-level and lateral candidates must have 3-5 years as a patrol officer before transfers or promotions. Having experience with the unpredictable and diverse nature of events that come with patrol work is absolutely vital background knowledge before making a transition to any other type of police work. Modern policing is very complex and every city is very different so it is also important that you learn the specifics of this department and this city before any transfers.

People choose to go into policing because they love the job. In fact, many patrol officers find that they love the work so much that they choose to stay in patrol for their entire career. If you are not interested in patrol work at all and only want to be part of an advanced specialty unit, you are probably not ready to realistically consider a career in policing.

Do Most Of Your Officers Come From Similar Backgrounds

No, the backgrounds of our officers are varied and diverse. Some of our officers have decided to proudly continue a family tradition of service. Others knew they wanted to be police officers ever since they can remember and come to the department with college degrees in Criminal Justice, although this is not required. Others have a prior military background, or have transferred to the department as a lateral hire from another agency. Still others are attracted to this career through their interactions with police officers in social work or law careers. But many of our officers have backgrounds and interests not at all related to law enforcement and have decided to go into policing as a second or third career.

Everyone Has Strengths And Weaknesses

I was an LEO when women were first getting hired. I started the academy at 29 and was the second oldest person in my class. My roommate in the dorm was 19 she could run like a deer, jump over the 8′ wall like it was a bump on the road, and generally made me feel old. My saving grace was that I had a BA in criminology and had worked as a county investigator. I held classes in our TV room on the law and evidence. We each have our strong and weak suits. Increasing Maximum Hiring Age Of New Police Officers Rejected By Park Ridge City Council Not Supported By Police Chief

What the New

A proposal to increase the maximum age at hiring of new police officers in Park Ridge failed to generate support from elected officials or the citys chief of police this month.

Six of Park Ridges seven aldermen said on Nov. 15 that they are not interested in pursuing an ordinance change that would bump up the cut-off age for new police officers from 35 to 40. The proposal would have applied to both entry-level hires and lateral transfers from other police departments.

Some elected officials also raised objections on how the proposal came about and that legal work on the ordinance was performed without authorization from the city.

The age change request came from the Park Ridge Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, a volunteer body with five members appointed by the mayor with approval of the City Council. Among the boards duties are establishing lists of qualified candidates for hiring and promotion within the police and fire departments.

Peter McNamara, chairman of the board, suggested that increasing the maximum age of new hires may allow for a larger pool of officer candidates at a time when the number of individuals applying to become police officers has fallen.

Age Has Less Relevance Than You Think

When you apply to be part of the police force, most departments will look at other factors first, before your age. How physically capable you are is much more important as they want to make sure you can adequately perform the tasks required. If you have good fitness and can prove that youre capable of physically exerting yourself than age will likely be overlooked. Part of being in law enforcement means you need to be in great shape so you can keep up with anything that gets thrown at you while on duty.

Firstly, its a good idea to have a look at the areas/jurisdictions youd like to be employed in. Do a bit of research to ensure they dont have a maximum age limit prior to making an application. A few of the larger police forces, like the NYSP have some restrictions on age and so does the federal government. But the US has a ton of police forces across the country and you will definitely be able to locate one near you that will employ officers regardless of age. As long as you fit the rest of the specifications than you shouldnt have too many issues getting accepted.

What Do Police Look For In A Background Check

The background exam is a very thorough investigation of the applicants past. It is common for the hiring parties to speak to colleagues, family members, neighbours, landlords, as well as present and past employers. This helps to determine whether you have a track record of high ethical standards in all areas of your life. You will be required to provide your criminal record, driving record, credit history, and history of alcohol and drug use. Additionally, you will need to pass a polygraph exam that shows whether you have been dishonest or deceitful in answering any of the questions throughout the application process.

When applying to police agencies, you will be disqualified if*:

  • You have matters pending at a criminal court
  • You participated in any indictable offenses. These offenses are the mostserious of criminal activities, which include murder, sexual assault, and terrorist activities.
  • You have a criminal conviction that has not been pardone.
  • You participated in less serious criminal behaviour or activity within one year of applying. These activities are referred to as summary conviction offenses under the Criminal Code. They include illicit drug use, theft, and impaired driving.
  • You have been dishonourably discharged or dismissed from any other law enforcement organization
  • You have a pending or current personal bankruptcy
