The Crestview Police Department is augmented by up to 10 Auxiliary Police Officers and 10 Part-Time Police Officers. These men and women graciously donate their time without financial compensation to support and augment various law enforcement functions within the Crestview Police Department.

Auxiliary officers are vested with the authority of a law enforcement officer while acting under the direction and supervision of a full-time officer. Auxiliary officers wear uniforms and badges similar to those of full-time officers and are authorized to carry a firearm on duty. Auxiliary officers ride-along with officers on patrol to provide back-up and assist officers in their normal duties. Auxiliary officers who successfully complete supplemental field training are authorized to perform solo limited scope patrol and traffic enforcement duties in assigned areas, as directed by the on-duty Patrol Sergeant.

Some auxiliary officers choose to eventually become full-time officers. In fact, four of the Crestview Police Departments current Sergeants and one Lieutenant began their careers as auxiliary officers with the Crestview Police Department. Other auxiliary officers work in separate career fields while serving their community in their spare time in this unique and honorable way.

To work as a reserve officer, generally, you must have attended a police academy and passed the accompanying state certification or POST exam. Some agencies may require that you previously worked full time, while others may hire you as a reservist straight out of the academy.

Some departments pay their reserve officers on a part-time basis. Many work full time in other professions and choose to perform reserve work simply because they enjoy it. Others retired from law enforcement or resigned to pursue other opportunities. They work as reservists on the weekends to stay sharp and connected to the profession they loved.

Impact On Social Life

Lets briefly touch on your general social life. Keeping up with family and friends may become slightly difficult as you work strange and long hours.

You will typically be exhausted after working a twelve hour shift and when you get home, you may find yourself just needing to chill without the social interaction.

However, make sure you communicate your situation with those closest to you so that they understand what you are going through. Youll be surprised how understanding theyll become and accommodating to scheduling catchups around when you can meet.

Be prepared to miss out on birthdays, St. Patricks Day, Cinco de Mayo or days filled with activities. But get on the front foot and asked your closest to celebrate with you on a time that works for everyone. A party isnt a party without the people you want to have there!

The Metropolitan Police has announced that police constable recruits will be able to join the service on a part-time basis, becoming the first force in the UK to make such roles available.

From November, the Met will allow new recruits to complete their training doing part-time hours before hitting the streets of London on a permanent, part-time basis.

The force hopes it will make the role more attractive to those considering a career in policing who feel unable to work full-time because of family or other commitments.

Research conducted by the force has shown long working hours is one reason people feel a police constable role was not for them, and this feedback was particularly high among women.

The opportunity is open to both men and women, however, and applicants will soon be able to select from a full-time role doing 40 hours a week, part-time doing 24 hours a week, or part-time doing 16 hours a week.
