New California laws will change who can become a police officer

Public Safety Officers are required to demonstrate the highest possible personal integrity through your honesty and ethical conduct. You must be able to maintain high standards of personal conduct, abide by the law, and demonstrate attributes such as truthfulness and fairness in relationships with others. You must demonstrate a willingness to work within the organization. Examples of behaviors which meet this standard include, but are not limited to:

  • Being truthful in dealings with others
  • Fully cooperating and being completely forthcoming during the pre-employment selection process
  • Admitting and understanding past mistakes
  • Refraining from using employment or a position of authority for personal gain
  • Refraining from bending rules or otherwise trying to beat the system
  • Accepting responsibility for your actions

What About Basic Training

Completing a basic police academy prior to your hiring is dependent on the agency you apply to. Some will only hire upon completion of the academy others hire you and then send you through the academy afterward. Check with the agency youre applying to for further information.

Alternative Response Officers To Become Permanent Fixture On Saskatoon Streets

A Saskatoon Police Service pilot project will now become a permanent part of the organization.

The Board of Police Commissioners voted in favour of making the Alternative Response Officers pilot program a permanent component part of the SPS this week.

During the discussion, Randy Pshebylo from the Riversdale business improvement district called the program a success.

From all accounts, even outside my window, the arrests are being made when necessary and its not just moving the problem on its being dealt with head-on.

Pshebylo said the security provided by AROs gave business owners the confidence to increase their evening activity in the area.

That encourages that night time activity and economy that were going towards, he said at the meeting.

Our eyes as the Riverdale business improvement district are on this downtown event and entertainment district to build it as close as possible.and that will in itself create more people and instances and safety but were not there yet.

In a presentation that examined the effectiveness of the ARO program, Darren Pringle told the board that in the 240 days of duty for AROs, they were more inclined to give warnings and offer support than to pursue enforcement.

There was some initial concern when this came out that it was going to be all enforcement, but we took the position that it was enforcement if necessary but not necessarily enforcement, Pringle explained.

Minimum Requirements To Be A Police Officer In California

Must successfully complete a minimum of sixteen hours of CLEST certified training annually, to include firearms qualification and Racial Profiling. All individuals vested with the powers of a peace officer must meet state minimum selection standards, whether they are applying to be a highway patrol officer, insurance fraud investigator, part-time reserve officer, or any one of hundreds of classifications of peace officer. To be a peace officer in California, at a minimum you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship (Note: CHP officers must be U.S. citizens at the time of appointment
  • Have a U.S. high school diploma, GED certificate, or high school equivalency certificate, or a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved college/university
  • Be free of any felony conviction or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying
  • Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Be free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.

    California Trooper Or Highway Patrol Requirements

    California has an extensive interconnected state highway system.     Police Detective Job Description

    Detectives are promoted from the officer rank after a probationary period on the force. Some officers work a beat for some period of time before being promoted to detective, while others remain uniformed officers for the duration of their career.

    Aside from interrogating criminals and suspects, detectives must cultivate networks of informants and collect and preserve evidence. Some cases are open for years, while others remain cold and are never broken. Detectives must have tenacity and be detail-oriented, willing to persist in the investigation of a crime for as long as theyre assigned. Shift work and paid overtime are the norm.     Complete The Minimum Requirements

    For a police department to consider your application, there are minimum requirements for you to pass. Most California police departments adhere to the Peace Officer Selection Requirements , but some may not, so it’s important to check with the department you’re applying to be sure. The age requirements may also vary depending on the department. For example, some departments have 18 years old as their minimum age requirement. The POST requirements include:

    The following requirements are usually required for a job as a CSI in California. However, different agencies/departments or locations may not require all of them.

    Education The right education is the most important requirement for a successful career as a CSI. Some California schools offer a certificate in crime scene investigation that usually involves 20 credit hours in such relevant courses as:

    • Introduction to Criminal Law/Procedure
    • Blood Pattern Analysis
    • Forensic Digital Imaging

    Although an associates degree and/or a certificate will possibly qualify a person for an entry-level position, most jobs in the field, and any hope of advancement, require a bachelors degree in a physical or biological science with at least eight semesters of chemistry and three semesters of quantitative analyses. It is especially important for prospective CSIs to take science courses that include lab work.

    Other Knowledge/Skills Must have knowledge of scientific methods/techniques used in crime scene investigations as well as photographic skills since CSIs photograph evidence. Must also have the ability to:

    • Test blood and fluids, including DNA analyses
