Acquire A Degree Or Academy Training

The requirements for this step will vary substantially depending on the state in which you plan on becoming a police officer. Some states do not require their officers to be college-educated, even if they may prefer it. Other states, like Minnesota, an Associates degree or equivalent training is one of the requirements to become a police officer.

Generally speaking, the training process for aspiring police officers follows two routes:

Since police officer requirements differ, youll want to be sure to check with the agency that sets the standards for law enforcement training and licensure in your area. Some also have arrangements for military reciprocity, allowing candidates who served in the military to follow a different process in acknowledgement of the training they already have.

Whichever path you take, your training will include classroom instruction in state and local laws, covering topics like constitutional law, civil rights and police ethics. Recruits also receive training and supervised experience in areas such as patrol, traffic control, firearm use, self-defense, first aid and emergency response.

Example Answer : Build A Relationship With The Community

“I want to be a police officer to help restore the relationship between the police and the community. I have always viewed the police as people who want to help others, which is extremely important to me. While living in this community, I have noticed that the public could respect and trust the police more. As an officer, I plan to make an effort to rebuild this important relationship. I think that with a more positive police presence, we can gain people’s trust again and help them live better lives.”

    No Two Officers Are Alike

There is no one size fits all description for what a cop should look or be like. As officers deal with so many different types of people it only makes sense that the force should also be made up of different types of people. Each police force should, in some way, mirror the people they are assigned to keep safe. Communities of different races, social and financial standings etc. should be handled by appropriate and experienced types of officers.

One cop cannot do it all alone. Communities are best served by a police force that can function together as a team with each officer bringing something unique to the table. This creates a well-rounded force that can protect their jurisdiction most effectively. Including many officers of different ages and experiences will benefit the police force as a whole.

    Attempting The Police Fitness Test

Being a police officer is not an easy job – you have to be tough, smart and level-headed in some pretty intense situations. But you also have to be fit.

How fit? Fit enough to run, jump, and balance as well as climb walls and drag bodies.

It’s not as easy as it may seem.

Newshub got the opportunity to head along and attempt the police Physical Competency Test at the Porirua Police College.

Being the athletic goddess I am, I jumped at the chance.

The test asks participants be of “above average” physical competency.

I am decidedly below average but what I lack in skill I make up for in determination.

Superintendent Mel Aitkens has been a cop for twenty years. She’s about five foot of pure muscle – a formidable opponent for gangly, un-athletic me.

She may very possibly be the strongest woman alive – but she’s also warm, funny and very positive about my lack of sporting prowess.

After reassuring me I wasn’t going to keel over and die mid-test, Mel and I went head to head to see who the fitter woman was.

Unsurprisingly, Mel came out on top. But very surprisingly, after a lung-burning, stomach-churning, arm-wrenching couple of minutes, I made it out of the PTC alive.

And I only failed by five seconds!

So if you’re keen to become a cop, and get some better work stories, make sure you learn from my mistakes and do some training first.

What Is The Key To Maintaining A Safe Environment For Others

Employers may ask you this question to confirm your ability to keep people safe, a primary duty of police officers. Since those in this position carry weapons and have to respond to dangerous situations, it’s important for them to know how to keep everyone as safe as possible and minimize harm. Consider preparing an answer that acknowledges the importance of safety and expresses your willingness to adhere to safety protocols. You can also mention any related training you’ve had, such as first aid or de-escalation techniques.

Example:”I believe the safety of community members should be the top priority of all police officers. If I was a police officer, I would make it my mission every shift to follow all safety guidelines. I have first aid and CPR training and I am physically fit enough to help people who are experiencing injuries. I am also an expert at listening and remaining calm in stressful situations, which aids me in helping community members in need.”
