A reader posed this question via Twitter in response to a recent fact check on New York Police Department Commissioner William Bratton’s claim that more than 100 officers are killed every year due to anger, hatred and violence. Bratton’s claim didn’t hold true.

While more than 100 officers die on duty every year, accidents generally outnumber murders of police each year. Officers killed by offenders acting out of “anger and hatred,” such as ambush attacks, are a small percentage of officer deaths each year.

It was a timely inquiry, given the recent debates over race and homicides of and by police. And it was an important one, in the aftermath of the deaths of young black males recently killed by police and the assassination-style killings of two NYPD officers by a black offender.

Are black or white victims more likely to be killed by police?

Are black or white offenders more likely to kill police?

The first question is impossible to answer accurately, though many have tried by piecing together different types of data. The FBI maintains a limited database of self-reported homicides by police, and it is a conservative estimate at best.

But there is reliable data to answer the second question, using the FBI’s database of police deaths and injuries.

More white offenders than black offenders killed police between 1980 and 2013.

The Thin Blue Line Act Today

Moody requested congressional leaders to support the proposed bill at a news conference in Bradenton, joined by Rep. Buchanan and local leaders.

I am asking congressional leaders to take immediate action to protect those who swore an oath to serve by supporting the Thin Blue Line Act, Moody said. This legislation will provide local and state law enforcement officers the same protection and support currently provided to federal officers acting as a deterrent to anyone who would look to harm an officer.

Bradenton Police Chief Melanie Bevan, Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells, Bradenton Mayor Gene Brown, State Senator Jim Boyd and State Representative William Robinson, Jr. were all in attendance along with Moody and Buchanan.

The U.S. Representative said the bill was intended to show police and first responders that theyre supported.

Police officers and first responders put their lives on the line every single day to help those in harms way. I appreciate Attorney General Moodys strong endorsement and advocacy for my bill, the Thin Blue Line Act. Together, we are sending a strong message to police and first responders that we have their backs, and those who target our frontline heroes should know that there will be severe consequences, Buchanan said.

Traffic Poses The Biggest Threat To Officers

Car crashes and other traffic-related incidents pose the biggest threat to police officers, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the memorial fund.

More than 800 officers died as a result of these incidents from 2006 to 2019. That’s 43% of all line-of-duty deaths.

The CDC says behavior-related hazards put officers at particular risk for traffic-related injuries or death on the job. These include not wearing a seat belt, speeding, being distracted while on a device while driving or experiencing tunnel vision from increased stress.

Why 1930 Was The Deadliest Year

2020 saw the most law enforcement deaths since 1930. That year, 312 officers were killed.

The FBI ties much of that to the rise of gangs following the passage of Prohibition in the U.S. in 1920. Law enforcement agencies were “outgunned” and ill-prepared to take on massive gang operations across the country and the rise of the New York Mafia, according to the agency.

“By the early 1930s, cities like St. Paul, Minnesota, had become virtual training grounds for young crooks, while Hot Springs, Arkansas, had turned into a safe haven and even a vacation spot for the criminal underworld,” the FBI said. “More often than not, local police forces were hobbled by the lack of modern tools and training.”

What The Data Shows

The Posts database documents fatal police shootings that have happened since Jan. 1, 2015. The Post said its team relies primarily on news accounts, social media postings and police reports in addition to its own reporting.

This data does not include deaths of people in police custody, fatal shootings by off-duty officers or non-shooting deaths.

The Posts data shows police fatally shot 13 unarmed Black men in 2019, five more people than Kirk claimed. Also, police fatally shot an unarmed Black woman, Atatiana Jefferson, 28, on Oct. 12 in Fort Worth Texas. But the Post’s database covers only shootings. It does not include deaths caused by beating, tasering or vehicles. George Floyds died in police custody after a police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes, which would not have been included in the Posts data set.

The Post regularly updates the database as information about cases is released, so its possible it showed eight unarmed Black male deaths instead of 13 at the time Kirk posted the video. Its also possible the number will continue to rise as more information about deaths in 2019 comes to light.

Mapping Police Violence, a crowdsourced database that includes deaths by vehicle, tasering or beating in addition to shootings, estimates 25 police killings of unarmed Black men in 2019.

Why Did The Police Fire Their Weapons

The Louisville police say that they fired inside Ms. Taylors home only after they were first fired upon by Mr. Walker, Ms. Taylors boyfriend. They said that Mr. Walker wounded one of the officers, who was hit in the leg but was expected to make a full recovery. Mr. Walker was subsequently charged with attempted murder of a police officer, though the charge was dismissed in May.

The police also assert that they knocked several times and identified themselves as police officers with a warrant before entering the apartment. Mr. Walker has said he and Ms. Taylor heard aggressive banging at the door and asked who it was, but they did not hear an announcement that it was the police.

How Many Black Men Have Been Killed This Year

Of the 765 people killed by police in 2020, 28 percent of them have been black people – despite comprising only 13 percent of the US population.

Police brutality in America has sparked an ongoing battle between communities marching with Black Lives Matter protesters and Blue Lives Matter supporters.

Global demonstrations have also taken place to protest the harsh treatment of black people by law enforcement.

Protests in places including Kenosha, Wisconsin and Portland, Oregon have resulted in civilian deaths, hundreds of arrests and continuous unrest for months at a time.

Officer Deaths Tied To Covid

Coronavirus infections were the leading cause of death for police officers last year, according to reports. In 2020, 295 officers in total died, with at least 182 dying from COVID-19, according to the memorial fund.

That marked a 300% increase in a cause of death unrelated to firearms or car crashes, the organization said.

The memorial fund marks “other causes,” which account for illnesses or medical emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes at work, for resulting in the death of 88 police officers so far this year.

From 2010 to 2019, the leading cause of line-of-duty law enforcement officer deaths was fatal shootings, according to the memorial fund. A reported 528 men and women police officers were shot and killed during those years.

At least 11 Americans have been killed while participating in political demonstrations this year and another 14 have died in other incidents linked to political unrest, according to new data from a non-profit monitoring political unrest in the United States.

Nine of the people killed during protests were demonstrators taking part in Black Lives Matter protests. Two were conservatives killed after pro-Trump patriot rallies. All but one were killed by fellow citizens.

The new data highlights the danger of the presence of guns during politically charged protests, and raises concerns about continued violence during and after election day, when many Americans anticipate delays, confusion and protests before the winner of the presidential race is confirmed.

Police Officers Murdered On The Job In First 5 Months Of 2021 Says Fbi

WASHINGTON Five months into 2021 and 37 police officers have been feloniously killed in the line of duty, said FBI Director Christopher Wray during a House hearing last week. Thats a big jump when compared to the 46 officers violently killed in all of 2020, according to NBC News.

And that’s not counting all those officers who’ve died in the line of duty facing the countless other inherent dangers of the job, like from a car accident in pursuit after a subject or drowning during an attempted rescue, said Wray. Or even the scores of officers who’ve died from COVID-19. Because, of course, law enforcement kept coming to work every day despite the pandemic.

Line-of-duty deaths in general are up this year too, from 134 to 148, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Traffic deaths in particular have risen 42%, according to the data.

Leonard Charles Parker Jr

Gulfport, Mississippi

According to CBS affiliate WKRG, 53-year-old Leonard Parker Jr. of Covington, Georgia, was killed by a Gulfport police officer.

Fox and CW affiliate WXXV reported that the officer was responding to calls of a disturbance in the area. As an officer was approaching the area, Parker was allegedly driving away and drove toward the officer. The officer then shot Parker, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Biden Commemorates Police Officers Killed: Theres Too Much Pain Theres Too Much Loss

Speaking at the site where Capitol police officers thwarted an unconstitutional and fundamentally un-American attack on our nations values, President Biden on Saturday mourned nearly 500 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, while acknowledging that police mustwork harderto earn the trust of communities.

Theres too much pain. Theres too much loss. Theres too much at stake for your safety and the safety of those you serve, Biden said during his keynote address at the National Peace Officers annual memorial service.

The toll on this professionthese past two years has been heavy, he added. Unless we change the environment in which the job can be done, were going to have trouble having enough women and men come forward who want to do the job.

Saturdays memorial honors police officers who died in 2019 and 2020. On Friday, Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff as a tribute to the fallen. Last years event was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Biden told the crowd that he has attended almost every memorial in some capacity over the past four decades.

Still, his Saturday speech comes at a particularly fraught time for Americas relationship with its police forces.

Floyds family spoke at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, where Biden was nominated. And as president, Biden invited the Floyds to a White House meeting on the anniversary of his killing.

Path To Policy For Thin Blue Line Act

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations Uniform Crime Reporting data, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty dropped 30 percent from 2016 to 2017, going from 66 officers feloniously killed to 46. The majority of officers killed were in the South region, with 24 killed in the line of duty. A slim majority of the officers were in Florida, with three killed in the Sunshine State in 2017.

Buchanans bill made it out of the U.S. House of Representatives, but there was no further progress with Toomeys legislation stalled in the Senate. The two have continued to introduce versions of the legislation annually since 2017.

Data from the UCR shows the number of officers killed feloniously increased from 2017 to 2018, going up nearly 18 percent to 56 deaths. Again, the bulk of officers killed were in the southern United States. Unlike the year before, the data shows the most officer deaths in the south were measured at five in Georgia. Still, Floridas count rose to four, the second highest number among each state for 2018.

In 2019, the overall number of officers killed in the line of duty decreased by eight, a 14 percent drop to 48 from 56 the year prior.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic.
